Gayton McKenzie
By Thabo Mosia
In a wide-ranging interview on SMWX with Sizwe Mpofu-Walsh on 9 February 2025, Gayton McKenzie, the Minister of Sports, Arts, and Culture and leader of the Patriotic Alliance (PA), said the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) will face significant challenges in 2026. However, he acknowledged Malema’s resilience, suggesting that despite upcoming struggles, the EFF leader has the political acumen to stage a comeback in the long run.
McKenzie elucidated his perspective on the challenges facing the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) in the upcoming 2026 elections. According to McKenzie, although the EFF will encounter significant electoral hardships, its leader, Julius Malema, possesses the political acumen necessary for recovery. “It’s not an end for Malema,” McKenzie asserted, “but he’s going to go through a rough election in 2026.”
Julius Malema and the EFF’s Future
The EFF’s political journey continues to be a topic of much debate. McKenzie believes that although Malema will face trials during the electoral process, these obstacles will ultimately contribute to his growth. “What hurts him now will not kill him,” remarked McKenzie, suggesting that the upcoming challenges will refine Malema’s leadership. He attributed some of the internal issues to the departure of Floyd Shivambu, a key figure who left behind numerous dissenters within the party structure. This departure has, according to McKenzie, planted discordant elements that Malema will have to skillfully navigate.
South Africa’s Political Climate
Beyond the EFF, McKenzie offered a critical assessment of South Africa’s broader political environment, particularly the dynamics within the Government of National Unity (GNU). He highlighted the resilience of the GNU, attributing its potential longevity to two key factors: the public’s unforgiving nature towards any party that destabilizes the coalition, and the shared animosity towards opposition groups outside the GNU. “South Africa will never forgive any party that collapses the GNU,” McKenzie stressed, underscoring the precarious balance of power within the coalition government.
Relations with the United States
The discussion also delved into international affairs, particularly South Africa’s relationship with the United States. McKenzie emphasized the mutual dependency between the two nations, noting that while America is one of South Africa’s largest trading partners, diplomatic relations must be approached with respect and decorum. He criticized the U.S. for its reliance on “French racist rhetoric” about white people being under siege in South Africa, labeling such claims as unfounded.
Ministerial Initiatives and Personal Philosophy
In his role as Minister of Sports, McKenzie demonstrated a forward-thinking approach to revitalizing South African sports and culture. He spoke passionately about launching initiatives like bringing Formula 1 to South Africa and revitalizing local sports through school programs and international collaborations.
McKenzie’s leadership style is marked by intentionality and transparency. He has brought visibility to his ministry’s efforts, from promoting motorsports to advancing the creative arts. His determination to enact change is evident not only in his rhetoric but in his actionable plans and strategic partnerships with global sports entities. “People love people that are intentional,” McKenzie remarked, indicating that his approach is grounded in a genuine desire to uplift communities through strategic governmental interventions.
Personal Reflections and Authenticity
Ever candid about his personal journey, McKenzie’s narrative serves as an inspiration. Having overcome significant challenges in his life, he advocates for authenticity and resilience. McKenzie’s philosophy is simple yet profound: stay true to oneself while striving to make impactful changes.
The Minister’s authenticity extends to his perspectives on party politics. Unapologetic about the lack of democracy within the Patriotic Alliance, McKenzie argues for decisive leadership in contrast to conventional democratic processes which he perceives as deficient in delivering concrete results.
