Cape Town, South Africa – South Africa faces a growing crisis as crime rates continue to rise, with contact crimes and cash-in-transit heists being the most alarming concerns. This grim reality was laid bare by Police Minister Senzo Mchunu during the release of crime statistics for the fourth quarter of the 2023/2024 financial year and the first quarter of the 2024/2025 financial year.
By Nkosana Khumalo
Speaking in Cape Town, Mchunu emphasized the urgency of addressing the surge in violent crimes, including murder, rape, hijacking, kidnapping for ransom, and extortion. “These numbers tell a sobering story, reflecting the severity of the challenges we face,” Mchunu stated. “These numbers represent more than just figures on a page; they reflect the lived realities of our citizens—their fears, their losses, and their hopes for a safer tomorrow.”
A Disturbing Increase in Contact Crimes
The latest crime statistics reveal a troubling rise in contact crimes, which have increased by 3,831 cases compared to the same period in previous years, reaching a total of 153,637 reported incidents. Among these, assaults with intent to inflict grievous bodily harm and common assault saw significant increases.
Mchunu highlighted that four provinces—Western Cape, Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal, and the Eastern Cape—were particularly affected, with these regions housing the top 30 police stations for murder cases. Notably, Nyanga in the Western Cape remains the leading station, followed by Inanda and Umlazi in KwaZulu-Natal.
Despite a slight decrease in murder cases compared to the previous quarter, with 6,198 cases reported versus 6,228 in the previous period, the overall situation remains dire. The Minister expressed concern over the persistent high levels of violence, particularly in regions plagued by gang activity and organized crime.
Escalation of Cash-In-Transit Heists
Another pressing issue is the alarming frequency of cash-in-transit (CIT) heists, particularly in KwaZulu-Natal, Eastern Cape, and Gauteng. These provinces have become hotspots for such crimes, with Mchunu noting that law enforcement is working closely with cash-in-transit companies to devise strategies to combat this growing threat.
The frequency and audacity of these heists have put significant pressure on police resources and have contributed to the overall sense of insecurity among the public. The Minister reassured that steps are being taken to address these challenges, but acknowledged that much more needs to be done to protect both the citizens and the country’s economy from the impact of these crimes.
The Toll on Law Enforcement
The human cost of this crime wave has also been felt deeply within the police force. During the first quarter of 2024, 21 police officers were killed, with 16 of these occurring while off duty. The largest number of these murders occurred in the Eastern Cape, KwaZulu-Natal, and the Western Cape. Mchunu emphasized the importance of ensuring that law enforcement officers are adequately supported and equipped to carry out their duties safely.
National Efforts to Combat Crime
In response to the rising crime rates, Mchunu outlined the government’s strategies under the 7th Administration, which include a resolute focus on reducing crime, restoring public safety, and eradicating corruption within the South African Police Service (SAPS). The Minister underscored the need for investing in technology and enhancing crime intelligence capabilities to better target criminal networks and improve overall law enforcement effectiveness.
“Bringing crime levels down is our number one priority, to protect the citizens of South Africa and make them feel safe again,” Mchunu asserted. He called for a united effort, urging all sectors of society to work together in the fight against crime.
