WATCH |Former President Thabo Mbeki has expressed his opinion on the chant “kill the boer, kill the farmer”. Mbeki believes that this chant is no longer relevant in the new South Africa.

EFF (Economic Freedom Fighters) leader Julius Malema used the chant during the closing of the party’s 10th birthday celebration rally at the FNB stadium last month. This chant has been a subject of debate and criticism due to its violent nature and its historical context.

During the event, Mbeki discussed various aspects of South Africa’s history, including the role of the African National Congress (ANC) Youth League in the fight against apartheid. He specifically mentioned Peter Mokaba, who was a prominent leader of the ANC Youth League in the 1980s.

Mbeki stated that Mokaba popularized the chant “Kill the Boer, Kill the Farmer” during the struggle against apartheid. The chant became widely known and was frequently used by ANC activists to express their resistance against the apartheid regime.

Mbeki, who served as South Africa’s president from 1999 to 2008, stated that the chant was applicable during the struggle against apartheid, but it is no longer relevant in the current democratic South Africa.

He emphasized the importance of reconciliation and unity within the country, stating that such divisive rhetoric is contrary to the principles of building a united and prosperous nation.
