As part of a major advancement for local infrastructure, the Honourable Mayor, Cllr Zingiza Mgawuli, officiated the grand opening and handover of the Greenfield Access Road in Smithfield on January 21. The newly constructed 1-kilometer access road is set to improve connectivity and accessibility for residents, representing a crucial milestone in the community’s development.

The event was attended by key figures, including Ward Councillor and Speaker of Council, Cllr Thuhlo, and Cllr Lobi. The occasion brought together community members and local officials, who celebrated the fruits of a project that employed 34 local residents during its construction, thereby contributing to the local economy.

Acting Municipal Manager Nthuse Makgajane provided an overview of the project, highlighting its importance in improving access to essential services. “The Greenfield Access Road is not just a pathway; it’s a vital artery that connects our community to medical care, emergency services, and law enforcement,” he stated. “This road will eliminate the hindrances caused by poor road conditions, ensuring that help can reach residents swiftly when needed.”

During her address, Mayor Mgawuli emphasized the road’s far-reaching benefits. “This infrastructure will transform our access to critical services,” she said. “No longer will residents face delays due to inaccessible routes during emergencies. This road is a testament to our commitment to developing Smithfield into a thriving community.”

The Mayor also took the opportunity to appeal to the community to protect their new asset. “I humbly request that everyone takes pride in this road and works together to prevent vandalism. Public property is a shared resource, and it is our responsibility to safeguard it for future generations,” she urged.

Community members expressed their enthusiasm for the new road. Local resident and small business owner, Motebang Moloi, shared her excitement: “This road will make a huge difference for us. I can now bring my goods to market without worrying about damage to my vehicle. It’s a new beginning for all of us in Smithfield.”

Another resident, Lerato Dikwena, added, “Access to emergency services is crucial, especially for families with young children. I feel much safer knowing that help can get to us quickly now.”

The event concluded with a tour of the new access road, where residents were able to see firsthand the improvements that have been made.
