Vocal Criticism of Pravin Gordhan’s Legacy Amidst Family’s Privacy Request
By Thabo Mosia
Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) Central Command Team member, Matumba Anthony, took to social media to deliver a scathing critique of former Public Enterprises Minister Pravin Gordhan, labeling him the “Royal Prince of Apartheid.” His statement came after Gordhan’s family publicly requested privacy while he receives medical care after being hospitalized.
Matumba’s Criticism of Gordhan’s Tenure
In a post shared on X (formerly Twitter), Matumba criticized the Gordhan family for making Gordhan’s health a public matter. “We care less about Pravin Gordhan. Under that man, we suffered a lot and we are still suffering today,” Matumba wrote. He highlighted Gordhan’s role in the downfall of major state-owned enterprises like SAA, Transnet, Denel, and the Post Office. These failures, he argued, contributed to widespread economic hardship, with load shedding destroying small businesses and causing job losses.
Matumba’s words reflected growing public frustration, particularly regarding Gordhan’s leadership in overseeing state-owned entities during a time when Eskom’s load shedding crisis escalated and the South African economy faced significant challenges.
Gordhan’s Family Requests Privacy
The day prior to Matumba’s post, the family of Pravin Gordhan released a media statement announcing that the former minister had been hospitalized and was receiving the best possible medical care. The statement further requested privacy during what they described as a “difficult time” for the family. However, this call for privacy was met with criticism from Matumba, who questioned why such an announcement was necessary when, in his view, the public had not inquired about Gordhan’s wellbeing .
Reflecting on Gordhan’s Political Career
Pravin Gordhan, a veteran of the anti-apartheid struggle, has held several high-ranking positions in the South African government, including Minister of Finance and Minister of Public Enterprises. However, the last few years of his political career have been marred by controversy, particularly around the management of state-owned enterprises like SAA and Transnet, as well as his handling of the Eskom energy crisis .
His retirement announcement earlier in 2024 was met with mixed reactions. Political analysts noted his earlier successes, such as his role in leading the South African Revenue Service (SARS) and his stand against state capture during the presidency of Jacob Zuma. However, his tenure as Public Enterprises Minister has been criticized for failing to resolve the deepening crises in key state-owned entities .
