Matric Exam
By Thobeka Makume
The Free State Department of Education has issued an urgent reminder to all candidates registered for the “National Senior Certificate (NSC)/Senior Certificate (SC)” exams in May/June 2025 to verify their registration details ahead of the upcoming examination period. With the matric exams being a critical milestone for South African learners, ensuring accuracy in registration is essential to avoid disruptions during this pivotal time.
Free State Department of Education spokesperson Howard Ndaba emphasised the importance of this process, stating, “The Free State Department of Education reminds all candidates registered to write the National Senior Certificate (NSC)/Senior Certificate (SC)(a) exams in May/June 2025 to verify their registration details.” Candidates are required to visit the schools where they registered between 24 and 27 March 2025 to review their “Preliminary Examination (Prelims)” schedules and personal information.
This verification step is designed to ensure that all details on candidates’ “Admission Letters/Timetables” are correct, preventing any last-minute issues that could jeopardise their ability to sit for the exams. Ndaba outlined key aspects candidates must check, including the correct examination centre, name and surname, ID number, registered subjects, and any adaptations of question papers for those requiring special accommodations.
“Candidates must collect their Admission Letters/Timetables a week before the exams commence,” Ndaba added, noting that this documentation is non-negotiable for entry into the examination venues. Any discrepancies identified during the verification process must be reported to the relevant district office no later than 06 May 2025. “No candidate will be allowed to write the exam without being registered,” he warned, underscoring the department’s strict adherence to registration protocols.
The call to action comes as part of a broader effort by the Free State Department of Education to streamline the examination process and support matriculants in achieving their academic goals. Ndaba urged learners to act promptly, saying, “We urge all candidates to take this opportunity to ensure their registration details are accurate. Contact your district office for any queries or concerns.”
Why Verification Matters
The NSC and SC exams are crucial for South African students, serving as a gateway to tertiary education and employment opportunities. Errors in registration—such as incorrect subject codes or examination centres—can lead to significant setbacks, including disqualification from writing specific papers. By verifying details early, candidates can avoid these pitfalls and focus on their preparation.
The verification window from 24 to 27 March aligns with the closure of the first academic term for South African public schools, which ends on 28 March 2025. This timing allows learners to address registration issues before schools break for the holidays, reopening on 8 April 2025.
How to Verify Your Details
To assist candidates, the Free State Department of Education has outlined a clear process:
1. Visit Your School: Between 24 and 27 March 2025, head to the school where you registered to access your “Preliminary Examination (Prelims)” schedule.
2. Check Key Details: Confirm your examination centre, full name, ID number, subject list, and any special accommodations.
3. Collect Your Admission Letter: Pick up your “Admission Letters/Timetables” at least one week before the exams begin in May 2025.
4. Report Errors: If discrepancies are found, notify your district office by 06 May 2025.
