Deputy President Paul Mashatile will be embarking on an official visit to the Republic of South Sudan as a Special Envoy from 28th to 31st August 2023.

During his visit, Mashatile is scheduled to meet with South Sudan President Salva Kiir Mayardit, Vice Presidents, Ministers, South Sudan elders, and representatives from crucial organizations. The Deputy President’s itinerary also includes a wreath-laying ceremony at the Dr. John Garang Mausoleum and delivering official remarks at the South African Police Contingent Medal Parade in Juba.

Vukani Mde, spokesperson to the Deputy President, explained that the purpose of this visit is to evaluate the latest developments in the peace agreement’s implementation, oversee preparations for upcoming elections, reaffirm South Africa’s support for South Sudan’s transition, and further solidify the bilateral relationship between the two countries.

Highlighting South Africa’s extensive history with South Sudan, Mde pointed out that the relationship predates the nation’s independence in 2011. Since the signing of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement in 2005, South Africa has actively contributed to post-conflict reconstruction and development not only in South Sudan but also in the broader region. The country remains committed to fostering reconciliation, encouraging national unity, and promoting economic development for the people of South Sudan.

Accompanying Mashatile on this crucial mission will be Dr. Naledi Pandor, Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, and Mr. Mahlodi Muofhe, South Africa’s Ambassador to South Sudan.
