Deputy President Paul Mashatile has voiced strong appreciation for the concerted efforts made by the Minister in the Presidency responsible for Electricity, Dr Kgosientsho Ramokgopa, and the team at Eskom, in mitigating the country’s power cut issues. Speaking at a dialogue in Sandton, hosted by the African United Business Confederation (AUBC), Mashatile highlighted the significant achievement of four uninterrupted weeks of electricity supply, extending particular commendation to Eskom’s leadership under Mr Dan Morakane.

“This proactive move towards stabilising the nation’s energy supply not only underscores the efficacy of the leadership at Eskom but also reaffirms the government’s dedication to ensuring operational excellence across all power stations,” stated Mashatile. Amid concerns that these efforts might be construed as mere electoral manoeuvres, Mashatile reassured attendees of the genuine improvements within Eskom’s operational framework.

The dialogue, centred around the pivotal role of leadership in fostering economic growth, presented an opportune moment for Mashatile to underline the government’s strategic approach towards enhancing Eskom’s performance. This strategy, as the Deputy President elaborated, revolves around the implementation of a robust Energy Action Plan (EAP), which aims at a comprehensive overhaul, from improving existing supply chains to promoting private and household investment in sustainable energy sources such as solar power.

In his discourse, Mashatile underscored the transformative changes witnessed in Eskom’s leadership structure over the past 18 months – a crucial factor he believes will propel South Africa towards securing an energy-reliable future. “With the infusion of capable leadership, rigorous discipline, and strategic infrastructure investment, we’re paving the way for not only overcoming our current challenges but also fortifying our economy against future adversities,” he remarked.

Mashatile also took the moment to remind the audience of the Cabinet’s adoption of the Infrastructure Investment Plan in 2020, which underscores the government’s commitment to broad-based infrastructure development encompassing energy, water, transport, digital communications, housing, and agriculture. This, he posited, stands as a testament to the government’s resolve to stimulate economic growth and dent the high unemployment rate.
