Deputy President Paul Mashatile has urged political parties and civil society to work together to find effective solutions for coalition governments that will benefit the people of South Africa.
Speaking at the National Dialogue on Coalition Governments, held at the University of the Western Cape, Mashatile emphasized the need for a national framework to guide the management and navigation of coalition governments in the country.
The two-day dialogue aims to address the challenges faced by South Africa’s current coalition governments, particularly in local municipalities. With over 70 hung municipalities, the formation of coalition governments has led to instability and frequent changes in council leadership structures, hindering service delivery to citizens.
Mashatile highlighted the importance of accountability in governance and stressed that those in power must prioritize the improvement of citizens’ lives and guarantee peace and security. He acknowledged the difficulties faced by coalition governments but urged the current leaders to find resilient solutions to the country’s political architecture.
The Deputy President emphasized the need for united leadership and the collective effort of all stakeholders, emphasizing that the dialogue is just the beginning and must continue beyond the event. He quoted the motto of the University of the Western Cape, “Respice Prospice,” which means to look back, look forward, and learn from the past to build a better future.
"Whatever the configuration of governance, the electorate and the people as a whole expect from those who govern nothing less than the material improvement of their lives, a better future for themselves and their children as well as guarantees for peace and security". #NDCG pic.twitter.com/hI06dAjPZy
