Herman Mashaba, the leader of ActionSA, has publicly criticized the Democratic Alliance (DA) for appointing Roman Cabanac, a conservative podcaster and media activist, as the Chief of Staff in the office of Agriculture Minister John Steenhuisen. Mashaba’s criticism, which he expressed on social media platform X, underscores his concerns about the DA’s current ideological direction, which he claims is increasingly aligned with the principles of the former National Party.
Mashaba’s Concerns Over DA’s Ideological Shift
Herman Mashaba did not hold back in his assessment of the DA, arguing that the party has strayed from its commitment to social justice, instead embracing a direction that echoes the ideologies of the past. “Today’s DA is without doubt taken over by former National Party ideology,” Mashaba tweeted, emphasizing that this shift should not be taken lightly. He reiterated that ActionSA was founded on principles of social justice, and he warned that no amount of propaganda from the DA would deter his party from its mission.
The Controversy Surrounding Roman Cabanac’s Appointment
The appointment of Roman Cabanac has not only drawn ire from Mashaba but has also raised concerns across various sectors of the political landscape. Cabanac, known for his controversial views and past remarks, including those perceived as racially insensitive, was previously involved with the Capitalist Party of South Africa and gained notoriety as the co-host of “The Renegade Report,” a platform criticized for giving voice to extremist views.
Cabanac’s appointment comes in the wake of another controversy involving DA Member of Parliament Renaldo Gouws, who faced backlash for using racist language in his online content. This series of appointments has led to widespread criticism of the DA, with some accusing the party of tolerating and even endorsing individuals with extremist views.
Reaction on Social Media
Social media reactions to Cabanac’s appointment have been intense. Many users have expressed dismay over the DA’s decision, with some accusing the party of moving away from its commitment to inclusivity and justice. Mashaba’s comments have resonated with those who share concerns about the DA’s current trajectory. Posts on X reflect a growing unease among South Africans about the implications of such appointments for the country’s political future.
One user commented, “The DA is losing its way, and this appointment just confirms it. We need leaders who are committed to real change, not those stuck in the past.” Another echoed Mashaba’s sentiments, saying, “ActionSA seems to be the only party truly fighting for social justice now.”
DA’s Response to the Backlash
As of now, neither John Steenhuisen nor the DA has issued a formal response to the criticism surrounding Cabanac’s appointment. However, Cabanac himself has remained unapologetic, stating that he is comfortable with the role and dismissing the concerns as the result of “woke” opposition. He emphasized that his focus is on the work at hand, not on appeasing critics.
