Marumo Gallants secured a dramatic 2-1 victory over Orlando Pirates in a thrilling Betway Premiership clash at Dr Molemela Stadium in Bloemfontein on Tuesday evening, with a late goal from substitute Jaisen Clifford sealing the win after a tense back-and-forth battle.
Late Drama as Gallants Come from Behind to Stun Pirates
In a match filled with end-to-end action and missed chances, Marumo Gallants fought back from an early deficit to claim all three points against a struggling Orlando Pirates side. The win marks a strong start for Gallants in the 2025/26 Betway Premiership season, while Pirates suffered their second straight defeat, piling pressure on new coach Abdeslam Ouaddou. Played under the lights at Dr Molemela Stadium, the game drew a passionate crowd eager for Premiership football, though exact attendance figures were not released. [9]
The action kicked off at 19:30, with both teams showing intent from the whistle. Pirates, looking to bounce back from their opening loss, started brightly. In the 4th minute, the visitors launched dangerous attacks into the Gallants box, but home goalkeeper Washington Arubi was quick to react, preventing an early goal. By the 7th minute, Tshepo Mashiloane sent a fine cross into the area, only for Arubi to intervene again and keep the score level.
Gallants struggled to make inroads early on, with Mlungisi Khumalo and his teammates unable to break into the Pirates box despite their efforts. The 10th minute saw more pressure from Pirates, but no clear chances materialised. Tension built as Chabatsane and Sikhosana worked hard to shield the home goal from Pirates’ insistent attacks in the 13th minute.
The breakthrough came in the 16th minute for Orlando Pirates. A fine run from Deo Hotto led to a precise pass into the box, where Patrick Maswanganyi stepped up and unleashed a powerful shot past Arubi to open the scoring. The goal put Pirates ahead 1-0, rewarding their early dominance and giving fans hope for a turnaround in form. [57]
After the goal, the pace slowed slightly, with both sides searching for ways to create danger but failing to capitalise. The 19th minute saw a lull, as neither team managed significant moments beyond the opener. Gallants pushed forward in the 22nd minute, but the constant back-and-forth yielded no further goals. Hotto continued to shine for Pirates in the 25th minute, generating plays but lacking the creativity for a second.
The next few minutes were quiet, with little created in the 29th minute as both teams probed without breaking into the box. Gallants began to find their rhythm in the 33rd minute, but their plays were not ideal, and Pirates covered spaces well. A gem of a save came in the 36th minute when Pirates goalkeeper Sipho Chaine denied a Gallants shot, keeping the lead intact.
Arubi was called into action again in the 39th minute, making a great dive to deflect a ball heading for the net. The 42nd minute brought danger for Pirates as the ball travelled around their penalty area, but no Gallants player could connect, and the defence cleared. Then, in the 45th minute, Marumo Gallants levelled the score. Daniel Msendami took advantage of a great pass from Bheki Mabuza and fired a powerful shot past Chaine to make it 1-1.
The referee added five minutes of stoppage time, but halftime arrived with the scores tied at 1-1, despite multiple attempts from both sides.
Second Half Sees Substitutions and Late Heartbreak for Pirates
The second half resumed at the 46th minute with no changes to the line-ups, as the same 22 players took to the field. Both teams aimed to break the deadlock, promising an exciting 45 minutes. Pirates pressed in the 49th minute, looking for ways to score, but Gallants held firm.
A key chance went begging in the 52nd minute when Hotto found Appollis in a dangerous zone, but the ball sailed wide after failing to beat the defensive line. Gallants nearly conceded in the 55th minute after a good cross into their box, but Arubi intervened to prevent a second Pirates goal.
Orlando Pirates made their first substitutions in the 58th minute, bringing on Evidence Makgopa and Mohau Nkota for Boitumelo Radiopane and Tshepang Moremi to inject speed and balance. The game remained a constant back-and-forth in the 62nd minute, with dangerous plays but no breakthrough.
Arubi shone again in the 65th minute, keeping out dangerous shots from Pirates to deny them a second. Gallants responded with a change in the 67th minute, introducing Jaisen Clifford for Mlungisi Khumalo in search of a winner.
Pirates substituted again in the 70th minute, with Sinoxolo Kwayiba replacing Abdoulaye Fousseyni Mariko to bolster their front line. The 73rd minute saw many dangerous arrivals, but keepers Arubi and Chaine stayed alert, thwarting attacks.
Gallants made another switch in the 77th minute, bringing on Kamohelo Dominic Sithole for Bheki Mabuza after the latter had given his all. Unsuccessful attacks continued in the 81st minute, with forwards unable to break defensive lines.
Pirates changed in the 85th minute, introducing Mike Kamogelo Sebelebele for Oswin Appollis to chase a second goal. Gallants followed suit in the 87th minute with two more substitutions: Teboho Motloung and Doudy James on for Daniel Msendami and Christopher Sekela Sithole to push forward.
The referee added seven minutes of stoppage time in the 90th minute, setting up a tense finish. Then, in the 92nd minute, Gallants struck the decisive blow. A good ball from Teboho Motloung found Jaisen Clifford in the area, and he fired a great shot past Chaine to make it 2-1.
The final whistle blew at the 96th minute, confirming Marumo Gallants’ 2-1 win. Pirates failed to secure a point despite numerous opportunities, while Gallants celebrated a crucial home victory.
