Marumo Gallants Football Head Coach Abdeslam Ouaddou
By Sello Masilo
Marumo Gallants Football Club has firmly denied reports claiming that Head Coach Abdeslam Ouaddou submitted his resignation, stating it received “no formal communication or notice of resignation” from the coach and will await official information before commenting on the situation.
Marumo Gallants FC has moved quickly to clarify recent speculation surrounding the future of Head Coach Abdeslam Ouaddou. A day after reports surfaced suggesting that Ouaddou had resigned, the Bloemfontein-based club released an official statement on 2 June 2025, stating it had received no resignation letter. The move was described as a response to “unverified reports” circulating in the media, prompting the club to urge patience as it waits for official communication before making further remarks.
Ouaddou’s Short Yet Impactful Tenure
Ouaddou, a former Moroccan international who previously managed clubs such as AS Vita Club, was appointed by Gallants in March 2025, following the departure of coach Dan Malesela. His arrival was key to ensuring the club’s Premiership survival. In 12 matches under his guidance, Gallants recorded five wins, four draws, and only three losses, narrowly missing out on the top-eight finish and securing 10th position — a notable achievement given their mid-season struggles.
Additionally, the team reached the semi-finals of the Nedbank Cup, further affirming Ouaddou’s positive impact in a brief tenure. Thus, his potential departure has garnered interest and concern among supporters and football analysts alike.
What the Club’s Statement Includes
Gallants’ official release reads:
“The Club can confirm that it has not received any formal communication or notice of resignation from Coach Ouaddou. In light of this, we will not be making any further comments on the unverified reports currently in circulation. We thank the media and our supporters for their understanding and will share any official developments as they become available.”
The careful wording serves to uphold the integrity of the process and guard against speculative reporting. The club’s position is clear: until a resignation letter is delivered, Ouaddou remains in charge.
How the News Broke
It is believed that Ouaddou issued a press release over the weekend announcing his resignation. Notably, some sources indicated his decision followed unsuccessful contract negotiations, despite his success in maintaining the team’s Premier Soccer League status.
Reports indicate that the club and coach had been in discussions over an extended deal after Gallants finished 10th, two points short of a top-eight slot. However, it appears these negotiations did not materialise into a formal agreement.
Contract Negotiations & Departure Factors
Sources from Bloem Express suggest that Ouaddou opted to leave after contract negotiations failed to produce a mutual agreement. Despite guiding the team to safety, both sides reportedly could not settle on the terms of a renewed contract.
In his resignation announcement, Ouaddou reportedly thanked stakeholders, players, supporters, and praised Bloemfontein’s warmth and spirit. Sources describe his parting note as a heartfelt farewell to the city and club.
Emotional Farewell from the Coach
According to Bloem‑Express, Ouaddou shared:
“It has been a great pleasure to have collaborated with all resources of the club… The people of Bloemfontein will remain in my heart forever. I wish the best to the Marumo Gallants… I obviously remain open to any proposal for an ambitious project and am determined to take on a new challenge.”
This message highlights both professional pride and personal attachment, emphasising the emotional complexity behind club‑coach relationships.
Gallants’ Reaction & Transitional Prospects
Now, Gallants has officially responded to halt speculation, emphasising due process and respect for contractual obligations. Their public posture suggests a preference for structured communication rather than rumours.
Sources do not yet clarify whether the club will immediately cast about for a new coach—though job postings are expected to follow if Ouaddou’s departure is indeed confirmed. Meanwhile, veteran coaches such as Schalk van der Merwe or club legend Duncan Lechesa may emerge as interim options.
A Look at Ouaddou’s Coaching Profile
Abdeslam Ouaddou enjoyed a distinguished playing career as a defender/midfielder in both Morocco and Europe. His managerial work includes high-level assignments across Africa, notably turning around AS Vita Club in the Democratic Republic of Congo. His profile and track record contributed to rapid changes at Gallants.
In his brief but effective stint, he solidified Marumo Gallants’ place in South Africa’s top flight—a considerable feat for a club recently promoted following acquisition of Moroka Swallows’ PSL licence.
About Marumo Gallants FC
Formed in 2021, Marumo Gallants emerged from the acquisition of Moroka Swallows’ PSL licence. The club performed solidly, finishing 10th in its maiden Premiership season and becoming Nedbank Cup finalists. Despite slipping out of the top flight in 2023, the club bounced back by buying a PSL licence and returned for the 2024–25 season.
The team’s home ground is the 46 000‑capacity Dr Petrus Molemela Stadium, and they are affectionately known as Siwelele Sa Marumo or Bahlabane Ba Ntwa.
Acting Chairman Abram Sello has guided the club through transformations—from relocations to licence swaps—showing intent on cementing the club’s position in elite football.
