Marumo Gallants Football Club has confirmed the acquisition of Moroka Swallows Football Club following the final approval from the Premier Soccer League (PSL). Effective immediately, the Motsepe Foundation Championship side will assume control, with the newly acquired team’s home games set to be played in Bloemfontein, Free State.
Official Statement from Marumo Gallants
In a statement, Marumo Gallants conveyed, “Following the final approval of the Premier Soccer League, (PSL) today, Marumo Gallants Football Club officially confirms the acquisition of Moroka Swallows Football Club. Gallants will take over Swallows with immediate effect. The club also confirms that home games for the upcoming season will be played in Bloemfontein, Free State. Gallants will provide more details of plans once staff, technical teams and players have been addressed. At this stage, the club will not be issuing further comments or taking interviews – a date will be communicated for a press briefing that will take place shortly.”
Financial Implications and Ownership Transition
According to insiders, Marumo Gallants’ owner Abram Sello put forth an offer exceeding Moroka Swallows’ initial asking price of R40 million. The transaction was solidified after intensive negotiations, culminating in the awaited green light from the PSL.
Moroka Swallows, a club replete with history and fervent supporters, has faced significant financial challenges since December last year. These difficulties led to a series of unfortunate events including a player exodus and the departure of coach Steve Komphela.
Chairman’s Decision Amidst Financial Woes
David Mogashoa, the chairman of Moroka Swallows, made the tough decision to sell the club due to persistent financial constraints that impacted the season, notably in player wages. The repercussions of these financial struggles became apparent when players went on strike last December. As a result, the Swallows were unable to contest their DStv Premiership matches against Mamelodi Sundowns and Golden Arrows, leading to PSL-administered 3-0 defeats and the dismissal of several squad members.
Despite these obstacles, interim coach Musa Nyatama steered the team to avoid relegation. However, attempts to secure sponsorships failed, prompting the need for a strategic sale.
Future of Gallants’ NFD Franchise Uncertain
With the acquisition, questions loom over the future of Marumo Gallants’ NFD franchise. Notably, Maritzburg United had shown interest in purchasing the Birds’ top-flight status but ultimately fell short. Both Gallants and Maritzburg United missed promotion from the Motsepe Foundation Championship this season, finishing 11th and 4th respectively.
Moroka Swallows: A Legacy Continues
Established in 1947, Moroka Swallows have been a staple in South African soccer, synonymous with the vibrant red and white. The club’s journey has seen numerous peaks and troughs, capturing the imagination and loyalty of fans nationwide. This latest chapter marks a new beginning under Marumo Gallants’ stewardship, promising renewed ambitions and hope for the future.
