Marumo Gallants have appointed Dan Malesela to replace Dylan Kerr as head coach. Kerr refused to work in a co-coaching structure and has resigned with immediate effect. Dylan Kerr has stepped down from his position as Marumo Gallants coach merely 28 days after his return to South Africa. Reports indicate that Gallants intended to bring in two additional coaches to work alongside Kerr as co-coaches, prompting his decision to resign.
In a statement, the club says the appointment comes as part of Gallants’ efforts to strengthen the technical team and address delays in finalizing the squad for the upcoming season.
“Malesela, a seasoned South African coach, brings a wealth of experience and a proven track record to Marumo Gallants. His football career includes playing for and coaching well-known South African football teams. His return to Gallants marks his third tenure with the club, and he aims to positively contribute to the club’s strategic goals.”
Kerr’s Resignation and Immediate Impact
Meanwhile, following disagreements with the management team regarding the co-coaching structure and other management processes, Coach Dylan Kerr has resigned with immediate effect. This sudden change in the coaching staff has stirred discussions among fans and analysts, speculating on the future direction of the club.
Further announcements regarding player signings and additional technical team appointments will be made in the coming weeks. The club will be unveiling the new kit this week at a media launch to be held in Bloemfontein. This event is expected to draw significant attention as the club reveals its plans for the upcoming season.
Early Career and Playing Days
Dan Malesela, affectionately known as “Dan Dance,” is a well-known figure in South African football. His career began as a professional player, where he showcased his skills as a defender. Malesela played for several notable teams, including Orlando Pirates, with whom he enjoyed a successful stint.
Transition to Coaching
After retiring from playing, Malesela transitioned into coaching, bringing his on-field experience to the technical side of the sport. He started with youth teams and gradually moved up the ranks, earning a reputation for his tactical acumen and ability to develop young talent.
Achievements and Tenures
Malesela’s coaching journey has seen him at the helm of various clubs. His first significant success came with Cape Town All Stars, where he led the team to impressive performances in the National First Division (NFD). His innovative approach and ability to motivate players garnered attention, leading to his appointment at Chippa United.
At Chippa United, Malesela’s tactical prowess was evident. He guided the team to the semi-finals of the Nedbank Cup, a significant achievement for the club. Despite facing challenges, including limited resources and high expectations, Malesela’s leadership was instrumental in stabilizing the team during his tenure.
Return to Marumo Gallants
This appointment marks Malesela’s third stint with Marumo Gallants. His familiarity with the club and its culture is expected to be a significant advantage as he steps into the head coach role. Malesela’s return is seen as a strategic move by the club to leverage his experience and insights to achieve their goals.
Challenges and Controversies
Like any high-profile coach, Malesela’s career has not been without its challenges. His tenure at Baroka FC ended abruptly during the promotional play-offs, a decision that surprised many in the football community. Additionally, his outspoken nature sometimes lands him in hot water, as seen in his recent criticism of Mamelodi Sundowns’ appointment of Romain Folz as their assistant coach.
During a recent interview, Dan Malesela revealed he would accept being an assistant coach at a club like Mamelodi Sundowns should that opportunity present itself, insisting he didn’t question the appointment of Romain Folz because he wanted the job for himself.
