Meta, under CEO Mark Zuckerberg, has donated $1 million to President-elect Donald Trump’s inaugural fund, marking a significant step in mending their previously strained relationship.

This contribution underscores Meta’s engagement in the political sphere, aligning with other major corporations that have historically supported presidential inaugurations. Notably, during Trump’s 2017 inauguration, top donors included Las Vegas casino magnate Sheldon Adelson, who contributed $5 million, and other corporations that donated $1 million each.

The relationship between Zuckerberg and Trump has been complex. In 2021, following the Capitol riot, Meta suspended Trump’s accounts on Facebook and Instagram, citing risks associated with his continued use of the platforms. This decision led to public disagreements, with Trump accusing Facebook of bias against conservative voices.

However, recent events indicate a thawing of tensions. In late November 2024, Zuckerberg dined with Trump at the Mar-a-Lago resort, signaling a potential reconciliation. A Meta spokesperson stated, “Mark was grateful for the invitation to join President Trump for dinner and the opportunity to meet with members of his team about the incoming Administration.”

This donation and the recent meeting suggest that Meta is positioning itself to play a more active role in shaping tech policy under the forthcoming administration. Nick Clegg, Meta’s head of global affairs, noted that Zuckerberg aims to engage constructively with the new administration on regulatory matters.
