MK Party Unveils Manifesto with Bold Vision for South Africa

Leading up, to the elections on May 29 the Umkhonto We Sizwe (MK Party), supported by President Jacob Zuma has released its manifesto that promises a radical transformation of South Africa.

Published on their website, the manifesto outlines a vision anchored in eight pivotal pillars designed to address the nation’s pressing issues, including inequality, unemployment, and the erosion of cultural identity.

Last month, the MK party’s spokesperson, Nhlamulo Ndhlela, announced that the party was gearing up to launch its election manifesto in Johannesburg, aiming to showcase its strength beyond its traditional stronghold of KwaZulu-Natal. “The launch date and venue would be announced at a later stage,” Ndhlela stated.

Central to the party’s manifesto is a call to action to reclaim dignity, land, the economy, safety and security, as well as asserting South Africa’s sovereignty both on the African continent and globally. The MK Party articulates a profound dissatisfaction with South Africa’s post-1994 trajectory, critiquing the neoliberal policies and constitutional arrangements that have perpetuated inequality and marginalization for the black majority.

The manifesto prioritizes **Reclaiming Dignity** through education reforms that emphasise indigenous languages and African values, and the repatriation of national heroes, aiming to restore cultural pride and cohesion.

In addressing **Land and Natural Resources**, the party advocates for a comprehensive expropriation of land without compensation and nationalisation of strategic mines to redress historical injustices and drive economic transformation.

**Reclaiming the Economy** involves bold proposals like nationalising the South African Reserve Bank and major financial institutions, and shifting away from neoliberal policies to promote small businesses and transform the financial sector to align with the developmental agenda of the country.

The manifesto also focuses on **Building Human Capital and Technological Capabilities**, promising free, high-quality education, national health insurance, and the integration of traditional African healthcare, alongside fostering innovation and research.

In **Reclaiming Spaces**, the party plans to tackle the housing crisis through the establishment of a state construction company and promoting mixed-use development, alongside overhauling the public transport system for better efficiency and integration.

**Safety and Security** are addressed by enhancing policing, tackling corruption, strengthening border management, and rehabilitating correctional facilities to ensure their effective rehabilitative purpose.

On **International Affairs**, the MK Party advocates for a stance against Western imperialism, pledging solidarity with nations like Russia and Cuba, and seeking stronger ties within the BRICS alliance, suggesting a pivot towards greater self-sufficiency and regional integration within Africa.
