Bloemfontein, Free State – Following residents’ concerns about tap water discolouration in parts of the Mangaung Metropolitan Municipality, officials have moved swiftly to assure the public that the water remains safe for human consumption. This announcement comes after widespread concerns were raised regarding the quality of the water across several suburbs within the city.
On 12 September 2024, the Mangaung Metro Municipality (MMM) issued a public notice stating that extensive tests conducted by the Vaal Central Water, the city’s water service provider, have confirmed that the tap water is safe. While discolouration was detected in certain areas, it has been classified as residual, and investigations have been launched to identify its root cause .
Affected Areas and Response
The affected areas include Fleurdal, Uitsig, Universitas, Langenhoven Park, General De Wet, and other surrounding areas. Water quality in these regions was flagged after residents reported unusual colouring in their water supply. In response, water samples were taken from these areas to ensure compliance with the South African National Standards (SANS) 241, the benchmark for water quality in the country .
The city’s water management teams are actively monitoring the water systems and have initiated processes such as sampling and scouring to resolve the issue. The discolouration, which is now showing signs of improvement in several parts of the city, is expected to fully clear up as investigations continue .
Assurance from Mangaung Metro
The Mangaung Metro Municipality, through its communications directorate, has assured the public that the quality of the water is continuously being tested to meet required safety standards. In their statement, the City apologized for any inconvenience caused by the temporary discolouration, emphasizing that they are committed to updating residents regularly regarding the progress of the investigations .
Water officials have acknowledged that while the situation has caused unease, the city is working tirelessly to maintain its commitment to delivering clean, safe water. Qondile Khedama, General Manager of Communications for the Mangaung Metro, reaffirmed that the City would provide constant updates as they continue their work to fully address the matter .
