Grandson of former President Nelson Mandela
By Mpho Moloi
A grandson of former President Nelson Mandela has been arrested alongside four other individuals for their alleged involvement in a hijacking incident. The arrests took place at Mandela’s former residence on Twelfth Avenue in Houghton, Johannesburg—the very home where the revered statesman passed away in 2013.
Details of the Incident
According to police reports, the incident began around midnight when an Uber driver was hijacked in the Norwood area. The assailants reportedly held the driver hostage for several hours before releasing him in Benoni at approximately 6 a.m. Following the release, the suspects drove the hijacked white Toyota Corolla to the Houghton residence. Law enforcement officers, acting on intelligence, apprehended the five suspects at the property later that morning. Among the recovered items were stolen goods and a firearm capable of discharging only blank rounds.
Connection to Mandela’s Residence
The choice of Mandela’s former home as a hideout has raised eyebrows, given its historical significance. The mansion, once a symbol of Mandela’s legacy, has reportedly fallen into disrepair in recent years. Family disputes and financial challenges have left the property abandoned, with overgrown lawns and unpaid utility bills contributing to its derelict state.
Ongoing Investigations
Police crime scene experts have been processing the Houghton property to gather evidence related to the hijacking. The suspects, including Mandela’s grandson, are expected to appear in court soon to face charges related to the incident. Authorities have not yet disclosed the identities of the arrested individuals, pending further investigation.
Background on Mandela’s Grandson
This is not the first time one of Mandela’s grandsons has faced legal issues. In May 2022, Mbuso Mandela was arrested for possession of an unlicensed firearm and a substance suspected to be drugs. He was subsequently released on bail. Additionally, in 2015, another of Mandela’s grandsons was charged with the rape of a 15-year-old girl, highlighting a series of controversies involving the Mandela family in recent years.
Community Reactions
The local community has expressed shock and disappointment over the incident, particularly given the involvement of a member of the Mandela family. Many view the former president’s residence as a heritage site, and its association with criminal activities has been met with dismay. Community leaders have called for the preservation of Mandela’s legacy and the maintenance of properties linked to his name.
Preservation Efforts for Mandela’s Legacy
In light of the property’s current state, there have been initiatives aimed at restoring Mandela’s Houghton home. The Collen Mashawana Foundation, in collaboration with the Gauteng Provincial Government, announced plans in March 2024 to renovate the dilapidated house. These efforts are intended to honor Mandela’s legacy and potentially transform the residence into a site of historical significance.
