Manchester United has announced the departure of Benni McCarthy from the club. The news was confirmed on Tuesday, alongside the appointment of Rene Hake and Ruud van Nistelrooy as new assistant managers of the men’s first team.

Benni McCarthy, who served as the striker’s coach, joined Manchester United in July 2022, following an impressive track record that caught the eye of Erik ten Hag, who was newly appointed at the time. McCarthy, a lifelong United supporter, was tasked with enhancing the team’s strikeforce, a role in which he excelled, receiving praise from both players and staff.

During his tenure, McCarthy contributed significantly to Manchester United’s success. The club secured two trophies and reached three finals under his guidance. In the 2022/23 season, United won the EFL Cup and finished as runners-up in the FA Cup. The following season, they clinched the FA Cup title.

Despite these achievements, Manchester United experienced a disappointing eighth-place finish in the Premier League this past campaign, prompting changes in Ten Hag’s technical team. Alongside McCarthy’s departure, assistant coach Mitchell van der Gaag also left the club.

United’s official statement on Thursday confirmed the appointments of former striker Ruud van Nistelrooy and ex-Go Ahead Eagles head coach Rene Hake to work under Erik ten Hag until June 2026. Steve McClaren and Darren Fletcher remain integral parts of the coaching staff as senior first-team coach and first-team coach, respectively.

“Mitchell has decided that now is the right time for him to pursue his own ambitions in a number one position,” Ten Hag commented on the club’s official website. “I want to pay tribute to his fantastic service over the past two years, and also to Benni for his important contributions. We send them our thanks and best wishes for the future.”

The departure of McCarthy, a Bafana Bafana legend, marks the end of his impactful two-year spell at Manchester United. His decision to leave is reportedly driven by his aspiration to return to a head coaching role. McCarthy’s coaching career includes notable achievements, such as leading Cape Town City to MTN 8 glory in 2018 and guiding AmaZulu to their highest-ever finish in the DStv Premiership.

Former Bafana Bafana and Orlando Pirates defender Mark Fish expressed confidence in McCarthy’s future, suggesting that he will succeed wherever he goes next. McCarthy’s tenure at United also saw him play a key role in revitalising striker Marcus Rashford’s form, further establishing his reputation as a popular and effective coach.
