Man Dies in Shack Fire at Marathon Informal Settlement in Germiston

Man has died in a shack fire at the Marathon Informal Settlement in Germiston on the East Rand, where multiple shacks caught alight in the early hours of Friday morning, leaving emergency services to battle the flames and recover his charred remains from the debris.

In a tragic incident that underscores the ongoing dangers faced by residents in informal settlements, a man in his early forties lost his life when a fire ripped through 12 shacks at the Marathon Informal Settlement in Germiston, Ekurhuleni. The blaze erupted just after midnight on Friday, 1 August 2025, prompting a swift response from firefighters who worked tirelessly to contain the flames. While no other fatalities were reported, the event has highlighted the vulnerability of these communities to fire hazards, especially during winter when heating sources like candles and paraffin stoves are commonly used.

Emergency Response and Scene Details

Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Management Services received the distress call shortly after 00:36, with crews from Primrose fire station arriving first on the scene, followed by teams from Bedfordview and Edenvale. A total of 17 firefighters formed a unified front, deploying two attack lines to combat the raging inferno. Their efforts successfully brought the flames under control and eventually extinguished them completely.

During the operation, information emerged about a possible entrapment. Firefighters initiated a thorough search, rescue and recovery effort, leading to the discovery of the man’s charred body beneath burnt corrugated iron sheets. Paramedics on site conducted a formal declaration of death before handing the scene over to law enforcement agencies for further processing. The victim’s identity has not yet been released, pending notification of next of kin and forensic confirmation.

The cause of the fire remains undetermined and is the subject of ongoing investigations by both the South African Police Service and fire safety officers. Initial assessments suggest it may have started in one shack and spread rapidly due to the close proximity of structures and flammable materials commonly used in informal housing.

Recurring Fire Risks in Marathon Informal Settlement

This incident is not isolated, as the Marathon Informal Settlement has suffered multiple devastating fires in recent years. Just two days prior, on 30 July 2025, a blaze suspected to have been sparked by an unattended candle destroyed 12 shacks, displacing 33 residents but fortunately causing no injuries. Local councillor urged caution with open flames and electrical appliances, emphasising the need for fire safety awareness in densely populated areas.

Historically, the settlement has seen even more tragic losses. In May 2022, a fire believed to have been caused by an unattended paraffin stove claimed the lives of three children aged nine, seven and two, along with a 43-year-old woman, all burned beyond recognition. Similar incidents in 2023 and earlier prompted warnings about winter fire risks, with authorities highlighting the dangers of makeshift heating and cooking methods in shacks built from highly combustible materials like wood, plastic and metal sheets.

These recurring events point to broader systemic issues in informal settlements across Ekurhuleni, including overcrowding, lack of formal electricity connections and inadequate fire prevention infrastructure. Residents often rely on candles, paraffin lamps and illegal electrical taps, increasing the likelihood of accidental fires, especially at night when vigilance is lower.

Impact on Residents and Community Response

The fire left several families homeless, adding to the hardship in an area already struggling with poverty and limited services. Displaced residents are likely to receive temporary relief from local disaster management teams, including blankets, food parcels and alternative shelter arrangements. Community leaders have called for urgent interventions, such as the installation of firebreaks, improved access roads for emergency vehicles and electrification projects to reduce reliance on hazardous alternatives.

Social media reactions from locals expressed grief and frustration, with many sharing stories of previous fires and demanding action from the City of Ekurhuleni. One resident noted the settlement’s history of such tragedies, urging authorities to prioritise upgrades to prevent future losses.
