A man hailing from Thaba nchu has been apprehended with a staggering 98 Identity Documents and over 100 bank cards.
He now faces charges of unlawfully possessing identification documents and breaching the Immigration Act.
According to Free State Police Spokesperson, Sergeant Mahlomola Kareli, the incident unfolded on Friday, August 11, 2023, at approximately 21:30 when Selosesha Public Order Policing members received vital intelligence regarding an individual in possession of numerous Identity Documents.
Acting swiftly on the tip-off, the officers found themselves at a residence in Zone 4, Selosesha. Upon arrival, they encountered a 28-year-old suspect, and a subsequent search of his room revealed a shocking cache of items. Sergeant Kareli explained, “Inside his room, we discovered 42 Smart card IDs, one Lesotho Passport, 55 Republic of South Africa issued ID books, 105 bank cards from various RSA banking institutions, and even a birth certificate.”
Law enforcement authorities are currently conducting investigations to determine the motive behind the suspect accumulating personal documents from different individuals. The discovery has raised concerns regarding potential identity thefts and fraud that may have already occurred or could be planned.
In an effort to resolve this matter and recover the stolen documents, the police are urging anyone who believes they may have lost or submitted their Identity Document to the 28-year-old suspect to promptly report to the Selosesha Police Station.
The suspect is expected to make an appearance in Thaba Nchu Magistrate Court in the near future, where he will answer for his alleged crimes.
