The Hawks’ Tactical Operations Management Section (TOMS) successfully apprehended a 27-year-old man in possession of copper worth more than R50 million. The suspect is expected to appear in the Pretoria Magistrates’ Court today, facing charges related to his involvement in a syndicate allegedly engaged in various criminal activities.

Acting on intelligence received, the TOMS team executed a well-coordinated operation on Friday at a property located in Attie Street, Booysens. Upon arrival, they encountered the property owner, who claimed to have purchased the copper at an auction in Bloemfontein. However, the suspect presented a second-hand goods dealer permit, suggesting that he was authorized to deal in copper.

However, according to the Hawks, the suspect failed to produce the necessary certificate that allows the possession of copper under the Criminal Matters Amendment Act 18 of 2015. Consequently, the 27-year-old was arrested, and the authorities confiscated the copper, valuing over R50 million.
