Mamelodi Sundowns Welcomes Romain Folz as New Assistant Coach

By Phenyo Selinda

Mamelodi Sundowns, the reigning 2023/24 PSL Champions, have officially announced the appointment of Romain Folz as an Assistant Coach to their first team. This strategic addition was confirmed on Monday, 22 July 2024, positioning Folz alongside notable figures such as Manqoba Mngqithi, Steve Komphela, Wendell Robinson, and Kennedy Mweene in the Technical Department.

Romain Folz, aged 34, is not new to the African football scene. His impressive coaching portfolio includes stints at Marumo Gallants and AmaZulu FC in South Africa, as well as at Horoya SC in Guinea. Folz’s recent role at FIFA’s High-Performance Department involved significant contributions to football development, leveraging his expertise as a holder of the UEFA Pro License.

The announcement follows reports last week that Folz had joined the Sundowns at their pre-season camp in Europe, indicating a smooth transition into the team. According to the club’s statement, “Romain joins the 2023/24 PSL Champions from FIFA’s High-Performance Department where he worked on the development of football. Mamelodi Sundowns players and Technical Team have warmly received Romain into the camp in Austria where they are on a pre-season camp.”

As the Sundowns continue their preparations in Austria, the technical team and players are gearing up for more competitive matches in the coming days. These matches are part of the club’s rigorous pre-season schedule, aimed at ensuring the team is in top form for the upcoming 2024/25 season, which kicks off in the second week of August with an MTN8 competition against Polokwane City.

With the team expected to return to South Africa this week, the addition of Folz is seen as a vital enhancement to their coaching arsenal, potentially strengthening their strategies and on-field tactics. This strategic move could be pivotal as the Sundowns aim to defend their title and continue their legacy in South African football.
