Mamelodi Sundowns Football Club has once again demonstrated its dominance in South African football, with midfielder Lucas Ribeiro Costa and head coach Miguel Cardoso receiving top honours in the Betway Premiership awards for February 2025. This recognition underscores the club’s exceptional performance throughout the month, solidifying its status at the pinnacle of the league.

Lucas Ribeiro Costa: Player and Goal of the Month

Lucas Ribeiro Costa’s impact on the field has been nothing short of remarkable. The Brazilian midfielder was instrumental in Sundowns’ success, contributing directly to eight goals in February. His tally includes five goals and three assists over seven matches, showcasing his offensive prowess and playmaking abilities.

One standout moment was his solo goal against Orlando Pirates, which earned him the Goal of the Month award. In this match, Ribeiro Costa embarked on a remarkable run from his own half, skillfully navigating past multiple defenders before finding the back of the net. This goal not only highlighted his technical skills but also his composure under pressure.

This is the second time Ribeiro Costa has been honoured as Player of the Month this season, having previously received the accolade for the September/October period. His consistent performances have been pivotal in maintaining Sundowns’ competitive edge in the league.

Miguel Cardoso: Coach of the Month

Head coach Miguel Cardoso’s strategic acumen has been a driving force behind Mamelodi Sundowns’ impressive run. Under his leadership, the team secured six victories out of seven fixtures in February, amassing 18 out of a possible 21 points. This performance not only reflects the team’s consistency but also its resilience in the face of challenges.

Cardoso’s approach has been characterized by tactical flexibility and an emphasis on attacking football, as evidenced by the team’s 22 goals scored during the month—a new Premier Soccer League (PSL) record for goals scored in a single calendar month.

This award marks Cardoso’s second Coach of the Month accolade this season, following his recognition in November/December 2024. His ability to adapt and innovate has been instrumental in Sundowns’ sustained success.

Team Performance and League Standing

Mamelodi Sundowns’ collective efforts have been commendable, with the team maintaining its position at the summit of the Betway Premiership standings. The attacking trio, including Ribeiro Costa, has been particularly effective, contributing significantly to the team’s goal-scoring feats.

The defensive unit, orchestrated by Cardoso, has also been robust, conceding only six goals in seven matches. This balance between offense and defense has been key to the team’s dominance.
