Mamelodi Sundowns Secure Hard-Fought Victory Over Sekhukhune United in DStv Premiership Opener

Mamelodi Sundowns began their 23/24 DStv Premiership campaign with a challenging yet rewarding 2-1 triumph over Sekhukhune United.

The game, which saw both teams reduced to 10 men, unfolded at the Peter Mokaba Stadium on Friday night.

Early on, Sundowns showcased their dominance with an impressive display of possession football. Their patient approach paid off when they were awarded a penalty in the 10th minute. Peter Shalulile expertly converted the spot-kick, giving his side the lead against a resilient Sekhukhune defense.

However, the match took a dramatic turn in the 16th minute when Vusimusi Mncube was shown a red card for a dangerous challenge on Aubrey Modiba. Despite the setback, Sundowns continued to control the game, leaving Sekhukhune with limited opportunities to launch attacks.

In the second half, Sundowns wasted no time in increasing their lead. Lucas Costa found the back of the net in the 56th minute after a brilliant combination play initiated by Marcelo Allende and Thapelo Maseko.

The goal provided Sundowns with a cushion, but Sekhukhune quickly responded with a cleverly executed free-kick from Jamie Webber, making it 2-1.

As the clock ticked down, Sundowns proved to be a potent force on the counter-attack, exploiting the speed and accuracy of their passing. Sekhukhune struggled to regain control of the match, while Sundowns expertly managed their lead with only 10 minutes remaining.

The game witnessed its final talking point in the 85th minute, as Rivaldo Coetzee received a straight red card for an altercation with Webber.

However, this did not hinder Sundowns from securing their first victory of the season at the Peter Mokaba Stadium.

Sekhukhune United’s Jamie Webber was responsible for their lone goal, while Peter Shalulile and Lucas Costa’s strikes secured the win for Mamelodi Sundowns.
