Mamelodi Sundowns concluded their 2024/25 Betway Premiership campaign in dominant fashion, securing a 2-0 victory over Magesi FC at Loftus Versfeld Stadium in Pretoria on Sunday. This win not only ensured a flawless home record—14 wins from 14 matches—but also marked their 24th league victory of the season, setting a new record for the most wins in a 34-game season achieved in just 28 matches.
Lucas Ribeiro Clinches Golden Boot with a Brace
Brazilian forward Lucas Ribeiro was the standout performer, netting both goals in the first half to clinch the Golden Boot with a total of 16 goals for the season. His first came in the 4th minute, redirecting Iqraam Rayners’ shot into the net. The second was a masterclass in technique—a well-executed free-kick routine saw Marcelo Allende lay the ball off to Ribeiro, who curled it into the top corner in the 22nd minute.
Ribeiro’s performance not only secured individual accolades but also exemplified Sundowns’ attacking prowess throughout the season. His partnership with Rayners has been instrumental in the team’s offensive success, with Rayners finishing the season with 14 goals.
Defensive Mastery and Tactical Discipline
While the spotlight often shines on Sundowns’ attacking talents, their defensive solidity has been equally impressive. Throughout the season, the team conceded only 11 goals, showcasing a well-organized backline and disciplined midfield. Goalkeeper Ronwen Williams played a pivotal role, providing leadership and crucial saves when called upon.

Sundowns’ 24 victories surpassed the previous record of 23 wins in a 34-game season, a milestone previously held by Manning Rangers (1996/97) and equalled by Kaizer Chiefs (1998/99) and Sundowns themselves (1998/99 and 1999/2000). Achieving this in just 28 games underscores the team’s exceptional consistency and dominance.
Additionally, Sundowns equalled their own record of 73 points in a season, matching the tally from the previous campaign. This consistency at the top level reflects the club’s commitment to excellence and strategic planning.
Peter Shalulile Nears All-Time Scoring Record
Namibian striker Peter Shalulile, who came on as a substitute in the 59th minute, remains on the cusp of history. With 127 top-flight goals, he is just two shy of Siyabonga Nomvethe’s all-time record of 129 goals in South African football. Shalulile’s contributions have been vital to Sundowns’ success, and breaking this record would cement his legacy in the PSL.
Magesi FC’s Fight for Survival
Despite the loss, Magesi FC remain 12th on the table, needing just one point from their final two fixtures to ensure top-flight survival. Their next match is against Marumo Gallants at the Seshego Stadium on 24 May. Securing their status in the Premiership will be crucial for the club’s development and future planning.
Focus Shifts to CAF Champions League Final
