Mamelodi Sundowns
Mamelodi Sundowns showcased their championship mettle by defeating Chippa United with a polished 2-0 scoreline on the evening of Saturday, March 9 at the Lucas Masterpieces Moripe Stadium. The victory punctuated a fantastic start to the season and fortified Sundowns’ leadership at the zenith of the league table.
Rulani Mokwena’s Sundowns widened their margin with a comfortable 12-point lead over their pursuers as the attention shifted to Cape Town City’s scheduled encounter with Royal AM on Sunday. Meanwhile, the Chilli Boys encountered their premier loss of the year, slipping to the 11th position in the standings.
The tenor of the match was promptly set when Teboho Mokoena demonstrated remarkable finesse by driving a volley home in the match’s infancy. The goal—which came just nine minutes into the game—signaled the beginning of what would be a challenging evening for the Chippa United outfit.

“We approached the game with our usual mindset – aggression, control, and an unwavering desire to win,” lauded Sundowns coach Mokwena. Despite several commendable attempts to level the scoreboard by Thabo September and Kwanele Kopo’s men, they were thwarted by the indomitable Sundowns goalkeeper, Ronwen Williams. He made a crucial save denying the Chilli Boys an equalizer and later on once more spoiled Bienvenu Eva Nga’s chance of scoring.
Sundowns’ resilient forward Peter Shalulile, despite an opportunity to accelerate the lead, was unable to convert his chance in the 27th minute. Nonetheless, the squad’s commanding play bore more fruit as the second half unfolded.
Substitute Tashreeq Matthews left his mark on the match by scoring a second goal for Sundowns, turning Mokoena’s assist into a decisive lead in the 85th minute. “This is what we train for, to make an impact when given a chance,” Matthews noted, exuding confidence after the match.
Keeping their defensive line impenetrable, Sundowns seized their 13th clean sheet of the season. This laudable defense, coupled with a strong offensive display, will be critical for their upcoming derby against SuperSport United at Loftus Versfeld. As Mokwena put it, “Our focus now shifts to the next game, continuing our momentum is essential for us.”

Lebusa, and a powerhouse midfield led by Mokoena, while Chippa United, despite ultimately succumbing to defeat, put up a commendable fight with S. Nwabali, S. Kammies, and T. Makhele among their ranks.
