Mamelodi Sundowns Achieves Historic 50-Game Unbeaten Streak with Victory Over Royal AM

Mamelodi Sundowns

Mamelodi Sundowns have etched their name into the annals of DStv Premiership history by extending their unbeaten run to an incredible 50 games. This monumental achievement came after a hard-fought 1-0 win against Royal AM on a vibrant Saturday at the Lucas Masterpieces Moripe Stadium, May 11.

Under the strategic guidance of coach Rulani Mokwena, the Sundowns are not just breaking records but are on the verge of setting a new one for the most points in a season. Currently sitting comfortably with 66 points and four matches left to play, the team’s ambitions soar ever higher.

In contrast, Royal AM, enduring a fourth consecutive defeat, finds themselves in a precarious position, merely five points away from the drop zone in 14th place. This match was crucial for both teams but for vastly different reasons.

Entering the game with confidence, Bafana Ba Style, as Sundowns are affectionately known, were fresh from a goalless draw against Golden Arrows, which preserved their unbeaten season start. Royal AM, on the other hand, were desperate to snap their losing streak after a recent loss to Cape Town Spurs.

The game commenced with Sundowns dictating the pace, albeit without immediate threat to Hugo Nyame’s goal. It was, ironically, Royal AM that showed glimpses of breaking the deadlock, testing Denis Onyango twice in quick succession before halftime.

The second half saw Sundowns ramp up their attack, with Aubrey Modiba and Peter Shalulile stirring Royal AM’s defence. Despite their efforts, the elusive goal only arrived in the dying moments of the match when Shalulile, in a display of sheer determination, headed the ball past Nyame, marking his seventh goal of the season.

As the final whistle drew near, Royal AM battled valiantly but was unable to penetrate Sundowns’ defence. The match ended 1-0, sealing a historic milestone for Mamelodi Sundowns in their pursuit of football excellence.
