EFF Leader Julius Malema Addressing the Media
By Thabo Mosia
Johannesburg – The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leadership, led by President and Commander-in-Chief Julius Malema, visited the Mphahlele family following the tragic death of Moshe Mphahlele. The EFF Johannesburg Regional Deputy Secretary and councillor lost his life during a peaceful community protest in Alexandra on Sunday, 04 August 2024. The protest concerned the occupation of unallocated government housing.
Malema, addressing EFF supporters, promised the party’s full support to the Mphahlele family during this difficult time and vowed that justice would be served. “We know some elements of criminality took place on that day, and someone should be held responsible,” Malema stated firmly.
In a statement to the media, Malema expressed his commitment to Mphahlele’s legacy. “We will carry the baton of our fallen hero towards Economic Freedom in Our Lifetime.”
According to reports from the Alexandra Reporter, Mphahlele was shot in the crossfire as police attempted to disperse the protesting crowd. The demonstration was over the occupation of flats in Bramley. Mphahlele, who also served as a ward councillor in Alexandra, was rushed to Masakhane Clinic but unfortunately succumbed to his injuries.
The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) spokesperson, Xolani Fihla, confirmed that the incident is currently under investigation by both the South African Police Service (SAPS) and JMPD. The circumstances surrounding Mphahlele’s death have raised serious concerns about police conduct during the protest.
The EFF has called for a thorough investigation into the incident, demanding accountability for what they term as unnecessary and excessive use of force by law enforcement. The party has also highlighted the ongoing issues of housing allocation and the plight of residents in Alexandra, vowing to continue the fight for equitable housing distribution.
A memorial service for Moshe Mphahlele will be held on Wednesday, 07 August 2024, at 14:00 at the Sankopano Community Centre in Alexandra. The community is expected to gather in large numbers to pay their respects and honour the memory of the fallen councillor.
