Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema visited the recently impeached former Western Cape High Court Judge President John Hlophe at his residence today.

Accompanying Malema were Treasurer General Omphile Maotwe and other senior members of the EFF, including the EFF Provincial Leadership in the Western Cape.

The meeting at Hlophe’s home wasn’t merely a courtesy call; Advocate Thabo Masuku, leading Hlophe’s legal team, briefed Malema and the EFF delegation on the details and strengths of the court challenge that will contest Judge Hlophe’s impeachment.

The National Assembly’s decision to impeach was carried by a significant majority, with 305 MPs voting in favour. This included representatives from the African National Congress (ANC) and the Democratic Alliance (DA). However, the EFF emerged as the primary dissenting voice with 27 MPs standing against the motion.

Now, with the National Assembly’s decision on the table, the ball is in President Cyril Ramaphosa’s court to execute the final act of dismissal.

The vote not only determined the fate of Judge Hlophe but also that of retired Gauteng High Court judge, Nkola Motata, who faced his own set of controversies.
