Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema has dismissed concerns over Floyd Shivambu’s return to Parliament under the uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party banner, asserting that the EFF’s “superior logic” will continue to dominate legislative discourse.

Addressing the media at the home of the late actor Presley Chweneyagae, Malema, accompanied by EFF leadership, paid tribute to the acclaimed actor, who passed away at the age of 40. Chweneyagae, renowned for his role in the Oscar-winning film “Tsotsi,” was lauded by Malema as a national treasure who showcased South African talent on the global stage.

“We are here to send our condolences to the family. Presley has been a very good actor and put South Africa on the international map when he won an award internationally. That’s where many of us started to appreciate that we’ve got talent in our country,” Malema stated.

Malema emphasized Chweneyagae’s humility and approachability, noting that despite his fame, he remained grounded and connected with ordinary South Africans. The EFF leader assured the family of the party’s support during this difficult time, highlighting the importance of community solidarity in moments of grief.

Turning to political matters, Malema addressed the recent Western Cape High Court ruling that dismissed the EFF’s application to halt a proposed 4% fuel levy increase. The court’s decision allows the levy to take effect, a move the EFF contends will disproportionately affect the working class and the poor. Malema criticized the ruling, stating, “It was not the EFF that got rejected; it is the people of South Africa who lost.”

The EFF argued that Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana failed to follow proper parliamentary procedures in implementing the levy, which is expected to raise R1.3 billion in revenue. The party maintains that the increase will exacerbate the cost-of-living crisis, impacting essentials like food and transportation.

In discussing the MK Party’s calls for black political unity, Malema expressed skepticism, suggesting that forming a new party under the guise of unity serves to divide rather than unite. “It is disingenuous to form another party and say you are calling for black unity. Once you form a party, you are already dividing people,” he remarked.

Malema questioned why the emphasis on unity is directed solely at the EFF, noting the absence of similar expectations placed on other parties like the ANC or the Patriotic Alliance. He posited that the unity narrative might be an agenda to undermine the EFF’s influence.

Addressing Shivambu’s re-entry into Parliament, Malema downplayed any potential threat to the EFF’s parliamentary presence. He highlighted the EFF’s robust leadership and the active role of young members in legislative processes. “Parliament now is run by young people. If he comes and thinks he can impose himself on them, they are already ready for him,” Malema stated.

Malema also touched on the departure of the Ekurhuleni City Manager, acknowledging her contributions and leadership. He expressed hope that she would continue to offer guidance, even in retirement, given her wealth of experience and the respect she commands within the municipality.

In a lighter moment, Malema shared insights into his personal life, revealing his passion for music and DJing as a form of stress relief. He mentioned that his son, who is also a DJ, makes his own decisions, emphasizing the importance of personal responsibility and independence.
