Julius Malema Calls for the Removal of SAFA President Danny Jordaan After Bafana Bafana Loss
EFF leader Julius Malema has called for the removal of SAFA President Danny Jordaan, accusing him of collapsing South African football following Bafana Bafana’s 2-0 defeat against Mali in the inaugural Group E match of the Africa Cup of Nations 2023.
The match was played at the Amadou Gon Coulibaly Stadium in Ivory Coast on Tuesday evening.
Malema directed sharp criticism towards Jordaan while speaking on X,
“Danny Jordaan, who was deployed by @MYANC, has single-handedly caused the collapse of our beloved sport. He has brought an end to the glory days of our football with his damaging actions. It’s high time we put a stop to this disarray,” he proclaimed on X.
We must demand the removal of the @MYANC deployed cadre called Danny Jordan. He single handedly disrupted and completely collapsed our football. It's time to take action and put an end to this nonsense.😠

Following the national team’s disappointing performance, numerous South Africans voiced their grievances on social media.
On X, @NalaThokozane stated, “With the deplorable performance by our national team, I concur that it’s time for Comrade Danny Jordaan to step down. His prolonged leadership at SAFA is detrimental. It’s not his personal business where he can afford to retain his position despite poor results.”
@_officialmoss added, “Danny Jordaan defines the current problem in South African soccer… We acknowledge his contribution to the FIFA World Cup, but he should consider stepping down, like Zuma. It’s unfair to expect a commendable performance from our boys under his lackluster management.”
Continued criticism has marked Jordaan’s tenure. He’s faced allegations of financial mismanagement of the Legacy Trust and potential corruption within the distressed association.
Last year, former Bafana midfielder Sipho Ndzuzo labelled SAFA as failing, urging Jordaan to resign after the U23 team failed to qualify for Afcon. Ndzuzo suggested that Vision 2030 was unsuccessful and called for an immediate response to the national disaster in South African football.
Also in 2023, the DA, backed by over 10,000 South African signatures, issued a statement pleading for Jordaan’s suspension.
In the meantime, South African Sports Minister Zizi Kodwa consoled Bafana Bafana after their 2-0 defeat against Mali. “Rise above this defeat @BafanaBafana. Learn valuable lessons and return with a vengeance to #AFCON2023,” he implored.
