Johannesburg, August 20, 2024 – Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema has delivered a scathing critique of those he views as betraying the party for personal gain. Speaking at the Gauteng Provincial Ground Forces Forum held at Orlando Community Hall in Soweto on Monday, Malema took direct aim at his former deputy president, Floyd Shivambu, and others who have recently defected from the party.
Malema’s speech was a forceful reaffirmation of loyalty to the EFF, as he emphasized that the party’s Constitution should be the guiding principle for all members. “No one has the right to tell you how you must defend your organization,” Malema declared, stressing that the Constitution, specifically Section 6, sub-section 7(b), mandates members to not stay silent when the party is under attack, whether in public or private.
This address comes in the wake of Shivambu’s departure, which sent shockwaves through the EFF ranks. Shivambu, who had been a key figure in the party since its inception, announced last week that he was leaving to join former President Jacob Zuma’s uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party. Malema did not mince words in his response, urging those who were considering following Shivambu’s path to do so immediately. “Leave now, so that we can know how many soldiers we have in this struggle to liberate us,” he stated, adding that the EFF would continue its mission without begging anyone to stay.
Malema also criticized those using the upcoming 3rd National People’s Assembly as leverage, threatening to leave if their political aspirations within the party are not met. He condemned such actions as opportunistic and warned against any blackmail attempts. “We must never be blackmailed by those who want to threaten us with leaving after the 3rd National People’s Assembly,” he asserted.
The EFF leader’s remarks are part of a broader effort to consolidate the party’s base amid a period of internal strife. Malema called on loyal members to “build an iron wall in defence of our movement” against both historical enemies and internal detractors. He urged the party to stay united and resist factionalism, which he described as a significant threat to the EFF’s generational mission.
Malema’s speech also touched on the broader historical context of the EFF, reminding members of the party’s founding principles and its commitment to the liberation struggle. He highlighted the importance of the Organizational Redesign Document, adopted at the 2nd National People’s Assembly in 2019, as a blueprint for the party’s ongoing efforts to combat racism and imperialism.
In conclusion, Malema’s address at the Gauteng Provincial Ground Forces Forum was a clear message to those within the EFF and beyond: the party remains resolute in its mission, and any attempts to undermine its unity will be met with steadfast resistance. “We salute you, the loyal, brave, and dedicated ground forces of the EFF,” Malema said, acknowledging the commitment of those who remain with the movement through challenging times.
