By Thabo Mosia – EFF Leader Julius Malema Criticises ANC’s Government of National Unity Proposal

Johannesburg – Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) Commander in Chief, Julius Malema, has strongly criticised the African National Congress (ANC) for its decision to pursue a Government of National Unity (GNU). Malema’s remarks come in the wake of the ANC’s disappointing performance in the recent national elections.

Addressing the media, Malema stated, “The arrogance continues even after the South African voters issued warning signs. You can’t dictate the way forward as if you have won elections. We are not desperate for anything; ours is a generational mission.” Malema emphasised that the EFF has no intention of supporting or joining the GNU, asserting their distinct political identity, “We are not Mandela.”

EFF’s Strategic Meetings and Forward Planning

Over the weekend, the EFF’s top structures—the 13th Central Elections Task Force (CETF) and the 2nd National People’s Assembly’s (NPA) Central Command Team (CCT)—are convening to deliberate their future course. The CETF meeting is scheduled to review the election’s closing report, while the CCT will explore potential coalition strategies following the 2024 General Election results.

The 2024 national election results demonstrated a significant shift in the political landscape:

  • ANC: 6,459,683 votes (40.18%)
  • DA: 3,505,735 votes (21.81%)
  • M.K.: 2,344,309 votes (14.58%)
  • EFF: 1,529,961 votes (9.52%)

The ANC, for the first time in decades, failed to secure a parliamentary majority, pushing them to consider a multi-party coalition to lead the country effectively.

Ramaphosa Advocates for Broad Unity

In his closing address at the special ANC NEC meeting on Thursday night, President Cyril Ramaphosa disclosed the ANC’s plan for a GNU approach to govern for the upcoming 7th Parliament. Ramaphosa acknowledged the need to collaborate with other political parties given the ANC’s diminished majority.

“We agreed to invite political parties to form a government of national unity as the best option to move our country forward,” Ramaphosa stated. He emphasised that the primary goal of the GNU is to address the critical issues affecting South Africans, including crime, poverty, the high cost of living, and rampant corruption.

“The purpose of the government of national unity must be, first and foremost, to tackle the pressing issues that South Africans want to be addressed,” he highlighted, calling for the “broadest unity” among South Africans to confront the nation’s challenges.

Ramaphosa also stressed the importance of transparency in the coalition agreements, “Agreements between parties should be in writing. They should be public, transparent, and include measures for holding parties accountable.”

EFF’s Stance on Potential Coalitions

While Malema’s EFF remains firm in its stance against joining the GNU, the party does not rule out exploring coalition possibilities after the 2024 elections. The upcoming CCT meeting will play a crucial role in shaping the EFF’s approach to potential collaborations.
