Bloemfontein – MEC Makalo Mohale honoured the late Freestate State Education MEC, Tate Makgoe, presenting a token of appreciation to his bereaved wife, Mme Ivy Makgoe, at the Motheo Education District Well Done Function held at Kagisho Comprehensive Secondary School on Saturday.

Tate Makgoe, a profound figure in South African politics and the education fraternity, was a distinguished member of the African National Congress (ANC) and stood at the helm of the Education department from 2009 until his untimely demise in 2023 following a tragic car accident.

During his tenure, Makgoe orchestrated a transformative agenda in the Free State’s educational landscape, with the province boasting some of the highest matric pass rates in the country. These achievements stand as a testament to his unwavering vision of advancing quality education for all.

A champion for community upliftment programs, Makgoe’s dedication to public service was lauded by all and his legacy, deeply embedded in the ideals of educational excellence, continues to influence the sector.

MEC Makalo Mohale, while addressing attendants at the function, described the void left by Makgoe’s passing and emphasized the need to uphold his mission of integrating education with economic development.

Mohale stated, “All the principles you are acknowledged, and all the other curriculum support staff that are here, and all the other admin staff – at a time when our country is facing a number of challenges, part of them is commonly known as triple challenges are known: inequality, unemployment, and poverty. And the question is, where are we? Where do we locate our education in this difficult questions I’m raising?”

He further questioned the economic focus of the Free State, touching on the need to leverage the province’s strengths beyond the current reliance on Mangaung as an economic hub.

“It poses a challenge that as a province we are more challenged. We need to do more to ensure that we optimize on our endowments and our abilities which are located elsewhere, and we know what those are – agriculture and all of those mineral resources which we have,” Mohale said.

The MEC called for a concerted effort to shift the focus from a high unemployment rate to creating a workforce prepared for the market demands and spoke to the harmony that must exist between education and economy – a vision he shared with Makgoe.

“Our ultimate goal as an education system is to ensure that we support the economy, to support the developmental program of government. And most importantly, we can’t speak of creating employment when we are not creating employers,” Mohale elaborated.

Addressing the current state of educational direction, he challenged the system with a reflective question: “Who are we producing for?”

He asserted the role of education in fostering entrepreneurship and hinted towards a more deliberate approach in preparing students to become future employers rather than mere job-seekers.

In conclusion, MEC Mohale recognized the efforts of the educational community, including teachers, parents, learners, unions, and sponsors, whose collective contributions had been instrumental in building the province’s education system to its current heights.

“I really like to thank you a lot and say continue doing that hard work. And most importantly, as well, the general members of the community… Let’s continue to raise this bar but most importantly, let’s not leave one behind. Our preoccupation as government is what happens to each and every learner,” he emphasized.
