Major R100 Million Drug Lab Uncovered in Rietfontein, Gauteng

Drug Lab in Gauteng

By Mpho Moloi

South African law enforcement agencies dismantled a clandestine drug laboratory valued at approximately R100 million in Rietfontein, Gauteng, on Wednesday, 27 November 2024. The operation led to the arrest of a 39-year-old Mexican national, highlighting the international dimensions of the country’s drug trade.

Lieutenant Colonel Amanda van Wyk, the police spokesperson, detailed the meticulous planning and execution of the operation. “Following extensive surveillance conducted on the premises, a multi-disciplinary team comprising the National and Provincial Organised Crime Investigations (Narcotics units), National Counter Narcotics, Diepsloot and West Rand Tactical Response Teams (TRT), and West Rand K9 unit obtained a search and seizure warrant,” she stated.

The raid resulted in the confiscation of various chemicals, sophisticated drug manufacturing equipment, and a substantial quantity of methamphetamine, commonly known as crystal meth or tik. Additionally, authorities seized cash believed to be proceeds from the illicit drug trade. The suspect is expected to appear before the Atteridgeville Magistrates Court on charges of dealing in and manufacturing drugs, as well as contravening the Immigration Act.

This operation underscores the persistent challenge of drug manufacturing and trafficking within South Africa. The involvement of a Mexican national suggests the presence of transnational criminal networks operating within the country’s borders.

Recent months have seen a series of significant drug busts across South Africa. In July 2024, authorities uncovered a sophisticated drug lab in Groblersdal, Limpopo, seizing chemicals worth R2 billion and arresting four suspects, including two Mexican nationals. Similarly, in August 2024, Gauteng police dismantled a drug lab in Douglasdale, Johannesburg, confiscating drugs valued at R80 million and arresting two suspects.
