Major Multi-Vehicle Crash Shuts Down R28 in Krugersdorp Amid G20 Summit Traffic Chaos

Johannesburg’s roads faced major disruptions as the G20 Leaders’ Summit kicked off, with law enforcement ramping up patrols on key routes and announcing the closure of the R28 northbound due to a serious accident. The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department warned drivers of heavy convoy movements towards the Nasrec Expo Centre, leading to rolling road closures and lingering traffic jams. This came on top of a chaotic multi-vehicle crash in Krugersdorp that left the R28 shut down, causing widespread delays. As world leaders gathered for talks on global issues like debt relief and climate action, local motorists were urged to stay patient and use other paths to avoid the mess.

The incident highlights the strain on the city’s transport network during high-profile events, where security needs clash with everyday travel. With emergency teams on site and no deaths reported, the focus now shifts to clearing the scene and easing the backlog for residents and visitors alike.

The Krugersdorp Crash: Details of the Chaos on R28

A major accident unfolded on the R28 near the N14 and Hendrick Potgieter intersection in Krugersdorp, involving around 35 vehicles, including four trucks. The crash, which happened in the vicinity of Pinehaven and the Silverstar Casino, saw a truck slam into over 30 cars, causing extensive damage and blocking the northbound lane completely. Emergency services rushed to the scene, treating 23 people for minor injuries, with no lives lost in the pile-up.

The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department described the severity of the wreck, urging drivers to steer clear of the area right away. “Due to the severity of this incident, the R28 Northbound is completely closed to traffic until further notice. Emergency services are on the scene. Motorists are urged to avoid the R28 Krugersdorp area immediately and seek alternative routes. Expect significant delays surrounding the accident scene,” the department stated.

Eyewitness accounts painted a picture of confusion, with vehicles scattered across the road and responders working to manage the fallout. The crash added to the day’s traffic woes, as drivers already dealing with G20-related closures found themselves stuck in even longer queues. Suggested detours include using the N14 or other parallel routes, but officials warned that backups could spill over into nearby areas.

G20 Security and Traffic: Rolling Closures for Convoy Movements

With the G20 Summit in full swing at the Nasrec Expo Centre, law enforcement has stepped up monitoring of critical transport routes around Johannesburg and beyond. The increased police presence is a direct response to the heavy flow of convoys carrying dignitaries to the venue. “This increased visibility is in response to heavy convoy movements heading towards the Nasrec precinct. Motorists are advised that rolling road closures are in place today to facilitate these movements, and residual congestion may still be present on affected routes,” the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department explained on Saturday.

These temporary shutdowns, which roll along with the convoys, aim to keep things safe but have caused frustration for locals. Key areas like the FNB Stadium vicinity remain under lockdown until Monday, 24 November 2025, with checkpoints and patrols ensuring no unauthorised access. The National Joint Operational and Intelligence Structure is overseeing the operation, with over 3,500 extra officers on duty and the military ready to assist if needed.

South African Police Service national spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe reinforced this in an earlier interview, stating that forces are on high alert to guarantee a secure event. “Law enforcement is on high guard as dignitaries pour in for G20 Leaders’ Summit,” she said, emphasising their readiness to handle any issues.

Advice for Motorists: Patience and Alternative Routes Key

Amid the closures and crash fallout, authorities have called on road users to drive carefully and plan ahead. “It further urged road users to exercise extreme caution, maintain safe following distances, and remain patient, as traffic volumes are expected to remain high throughout the region,” the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department advised.

With the R28 northbound out of action, drivers heading towards Krugersdorp or beyond should consider routes like the N14 east or west, or the R41 as backups. Apps and radio updates can help track real-time changes, but expect delays spilling into nearby towns. The G20’s convoy movements add another layer, so avoiding the Nasrec area altogether is wise unless necessary.

This mix of security needs and the accident has turned a busy weekend into a traffic nightmare for many Johannesburg residents. Officials promise to reopen roads as soon as safe, but patience remains the watchword.
