Magesi FC have etched their name in the history books by securing their first-ever win in the Betway Premiership, defeating Golden Arrows 1-0 at Mpumalanga Stadium. The victory, achieved with a late strike from Wonderboy Makhubu, marked a memorable moment for the newly-promoted Dikwena tsa Meetse, who had struggled in their opening two matches. The match was stretched across Wednesday evening and Thursday afternoon due to a power failure that forced the abandonment of play after 86 minutes.
Makhubu’s decisive goal, which came in the 79th minute, was enough to hand Magesi all three points and deny Arrows, who had won their first two matches of the season, the opportunity to top the league standings. For Magesi FC, this win represents a significant turnaround after back-to-back defeats against Polokwane City and Sekhukhune United earlier in the month.
The Game in Detail: How Magesi FC Sealed the Win
Magesi FC’s win was defined by resilience and opportunism, qualities often essential for newly promoted teams looking to make their mark in the top flight. The game started with Golden Arrows dictating the tempo, pressing high and creating several scoring opportunities within the opening 20 minutes. Lungelo Nguse came close with an acrobatic volley that narrowly missed the target, while Nduduzo Sibiya’s powerful shot from the edge of the box sailed just over the crossbar.
Despite Arrows’ early dominance, Magesi grew into the game as the first half wore on. Midfielder Motsie Matima had a golden chance to break the deadlock for Magesi, but his diving header missed the target. Both teams settled into a cautious rhythm, cancelling each other out for the remainder of the first half, which ended 0-0.
The second half followed a similar pattern, with neither team able to carve out clear-cut opportunities. Arrows introduced Menzi Masuku and Kagiso Malinga off the bench in an effort to inject some fresh attacking energy. Malinga nearly made an impact in the 72nd minute, but a tricky bounce before his strike took the sting out of the shot, allowing Magesi goalkeeper Elvis Chipezeze to make an easy save.
Just when the match seemed destined for a goalless draw, Magesi capitalised on a rare opportunity. Makhubu, stationed in the penalty area, saw his initial shot blocked, but the ball fortuitously rebounded back to him, and he made no mistake with his second attempt, firing home to give his side the lead in the 79th minute.
Seven minutes later, the lights at Mpumalanga Stadium went out, and the match was suspended due to a power failure. According to Premier Soccer League (PSL) regulations, the match resumed the following day, with only the remaining minutes and stoppage time played.
Golden Arrows thought they had salvaged a point in the 90th minute when they found the back of the net, but the goal was ruled out for a foul on goalkeeper Chipezeze. Magesi FC held on through the final minutes to clinch a historic win.
Magesi FC’s Journey: From Promotion to First Top-Flight Victory
Magesi FC’s promotion to the Betway Premiership marked a significant milestone for the club, which hails from the Limpopo province. Known as Dikwena tsa Meetse (The Crocodiles of the Water), the team had spent years in the lower leagues, building a reputation for resilience and determination. Their rise to the top flight has been a testament to the hard work of the players, coaching staff, and management.
However, life in the Betway Premiership has not been easy for Magesi. The team’s first two matches in the top flight ended in disappointment, with losses to Polokwane City and Sekhukhune United. These defeats highlighted the challenges faced by newly promoted teams in adjusting to the higher level of competition in the league.
The win over Golden Arrows not only provided Magesi FC with a crucial three points but also served as a morale booster for the squad. Speaking after the match, Magesi coach Steve Khompela praised his team’s fighting spirit, saying, “This victory shows the character of our players. We knew it would be tough in the Premiership, but we are here to fight for every point. This win is just the beginning.”
Golden Arrows Fall Short Despite Strong Start
Golden Arrows, who had started their Betway Premiership campaign with back-to-back victories against Stellenbosch FC and Marumo Gallants, were the favourites heading into the clash with Magesi. Abafana Bes’thende (The Backheel Boys) were aiming to extend their winning streak and climb to the top of the league standings.
The team from KwaZulu-Natal made a bright start to the match, creating several scoring opportunities in the opening stages. However, their inability to convert chances ultimately cost them, as they were left frustrated by a well-organised Magesi defence.
Arrows coach Vusumuzi Vilakazi expressed his disappointment after the match, stating, “We created enough chances to win the game, but we didn’t take them. Credit to Magesi for their resilience, but we need to be more clinical in front of goal. This is a setback, but we will regroup and come back stronger.”
Arrows will have the opportunity to bounce back in their next match against Sekhukhune United, while Magesi will be looking to build on their momentum when they host Royal AM.
Tactical Analysis: How Magesi FC Frustrated Golden Arrows
Magesi FC’s victory was built on a solid defensive foundation. Coach Khompela set his team up to absorb pressure and hit Golden Arrows on the counter-attack. The defensive partnership of L. Mokone and J. Mokone was particularly impressive, as they dealt with the threat posed by Arrows’ attacking players, including the dangerous Knox Mutizwa.
Magesi goalkeeper Elvis Chipezeze also played a crucial role in the win, making several important saves to keep his team in the game. Chipezeze’s commanding presence in the box and his ability to deal with crosses were key factors in limiting Arrows’ chances.
Going forward, Magesi relied on the pace and physicality of Wonderboy Makhubu, who was a constant threat to the Arrows defence. Makhubu’s ability to hold up the ball and bring his teammates into play was crucial in relieving pressure on Magesi’s defence and creating opportunities in the final third.
While Arrows enjoyed the majority of possession and created more chances, Magesi’s disciplined defensive performance and clinical finishing made the difference on the day.
PSL Regulations and Power Failure Impact
The power failure that forced the suspension of the match in the 86th minute was an unusual event but one that the PSL has regulations in place to handle. According to the league’s rules, when a match is abandoned due to external factors such as a power failure, it must be resumed at the earliest possible opportunity, with only the remaining time played.
In this case, the match was resumed at midday on Thursday, with the final minutes and injury time being played. Golden Arrows, trailing 1-0 at the time of the abandonment, pushed hard for an equaliser, but Magesi’s defence held firm.
Arrows’ disallowed goal in the 90th minute added to the drama of the resumed match. The referee ruled that there was a foul on Magesi goalkeeper Chipezeze in the build-up to the goal, leading to its cancellation. This decision was hotly contested by Arrows players and fans alike, but the referee’s decision stood, and Magesi held on for the win.
Looking Ahead: Upcoming Fixtures and Implications
The win for Magesi FC lifts them off the bottom of the Betway Premiership table, providing a much-needed boost as they look to establish themselves in the top flight. The three points will be crucial as they face a tough schedule in the coming weeks, with matches against Royal AM, Cape Town City, and Kaizer Chiefs on the horizon.
Golden Arrows, meanwhile, will be looking to get their season back on track when they travel to face Sekhukhune United in their next fixture. Despite the loss to Magesi, Arrows have shown early-season promise, and coach Vilakazi will be confident that his team can recover from this setback.
Fans React: Social Media Buzz
The match between Magesi FC and Golden Arrows generated significant interest on social media, particularly on platforms like X (formerly known as Twitter). Fans from both teams took to the platform to share their thoughts on the game, with many praising Magesi for their resilience.
One fan wrote, “What a moment for Magesi FC! First win in the Premiership, and it comes against a tough Golden Arrows team. This is just the start for them!”
Another fan expressed frustration with the power failure that interrupted the match, tweeting, “Only in South Africa can a game be played over two days because the lights go out! Crazy scenes at Mpumalanga Stadium.”
Golden Arrows fans, meanwhile, lamented their team’s missed opportunities, with one supporter tweeting, “We should have buried this game in the first half. Too many wasted chances, and we paid the price. On to the next one!”
