Mafube Local Municipality Fails to Pay Workers' Salaries Again

It has been announced that the ANC Led Mafube Local Municipality in the Free State will not be able to pay its workers’ salaries for December 2023, January 2024, and February 2024.

This comes as no surprise, as the municipality has a history of failing to pay its workers, with a similar incident occurring earlier this year when workers went unpaid for May and June.

The South African Municipal Workers’ Union (SAMWU) has been vocal about the situation, calling for the dissolution of the municipality due to its continual failure to meet its obligations to its employees.

SAMWU Free State Provincial Secretary, Tiisetso Mahlatsi, has criticized the government’s intervention, stating that it has been ineffective in addressing the municipality’s financial woes.

In a letter to the workers, Mafube Municipal Manager Adv. Mothusi Lepheana cited the Municipal Workers Retirement Fund’s (MWRF) legal action as the cause of the salary payment issue.

The MWRF has sought a court order to garnish the funds in all municipal accounts, leading to the municipality’s inability to fulfill its financial obligations to its employees.

This dire situation has left workers in a precarious position, as they are now faced with the uncertainty of not receiving their salaries for three months.

The impact of this extends beyond the employees themselves, as they will also have difficulty meeting their financial commitments and providing for their families.
