Madlanga Commission

Madlanga Commission
spokesperson Jeremy Michaels has confirmed that individuals implicated in the inquiry will be allowed to cross-examine KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, ensuring fairness in the process as the commission probes serious allegations of political interference and corruption within the South African Police Service.
Michaels also announced that National Police Commissioner Fannie Masemola will testify next, providing deeper insights into Mkhwanazi’s claims. The commission’s commitment to transparency includes public livestreams, potential release of redacted annexures, and open access for attendees with valid ID. This update emphasises the inquiry’s focus on due process, amid explosive testimonies that have raised questions about trust in SAPS leadership.

Commission Emphasises Transparency and Fairness

During an interview, Michaels highlighted the commission’s efforts to maintain openness: “Certainly from a transparency point of view, I think the public can look forward to being able to read for themselves all the detail as far as is legally permissible.” He explained that annexures referenced in Mkhwanazi’s witness statement, released in full on Friday evening, are being redacted for sensitivity and POPIA compliance before public release.
Michaels stressed that cross-examination is a key element of fairness: “Implicated parties will have the opportunity to cross-examine witnesses… and obviously also give their side of the story.” Witnesses like Mkhwanazi, who testified for three days last week under oath, will be invited back for questioning by legal representatives of those implicated. Evidence leaders will manage the process to ensure orderly proceedings.
The hearings at the Brigitte Mabandla Justice College in Pretoria are public, with livestreams on the commission’s website and various media platforms. Attendees must bring valid identification or a driver’s licence, and no weapons are permitted.

Masemola’s Testimony: Critical for Addressing Allegations

Michaels noted Masemola’s appearance is vital: “As the national commissioner of the South African Police Service, General Masemola is responsible for the operations of SAPS, and in the context of the allegations made by Lieutenant General Mkhwanazi… his testimony before the commission is critically important.” Masemola is expected to delve into issues like the disbandment of the Political Killings Task Team (PKTT), deployment of task force members to Richards Bay Minerals, and other themes raised by Mkhwanazi.
Mkhwanazi’s testimony accused former Police Minister Bheki Cele of pressuring crime intelligence chief Lt-Gen Dumisani Khumalo to resign to shield General Feroz Khan from investigation, linking Khan to criminal figures. These claims have shocked the nation, prompting Batohi’s call to treat them as allegations until verified.
