The theft case against Longwe Twala, son of music legend Sello “Chicco” Twala, is set to resume at the Randburg Magistrate’s Court today, 16 September 2024. The case has drawn significant attention following Chicco’s decision to open a case of robbery and theft against his sons, Longwe and Sello, accusing them of stealing over R400,000 worth of studio equipment from his Fourways home.

The arrest took place after Chicco returned from overseas, where he discovered the alleged theft. Although both sons were initially implicated, Sello was released due to a lack of evidence, leaving Longwe as the primary suspect in the case. Longwe made his first appearance earlier this month, where he requested Legal Aid services, citing financial constraints.

Theft Accusations and Evidence

Chicco Twala has been vocal about his belief in Longwe’s guilt, claiming overwhelming evidence against his son. Longwe is no stranger to legal trouble and has previously been involved in controversial incidents, including being a person of interest in the Senzo Meyiwa murder case. Chicco expressed frustration over his son’s actions, indicating that this theft is part of a longer pattern of behaviour.

“It’s not the first time he’s done this,” Chicco commented during a media briefing, adding that he is determined to see the court deliver justice, regardless of familial ties. The famous musician is adamant that his son’s lifestyle and involvement in criminal activities should be met with consequences.

Court Proceedings and Legal Representation

The case was postponed last Thursday, with Magistrate Abdul Khan granting a delay to allow investigators more time to verify Longwe’s residential address and confirm his legal representation through Legal Aid. This postponement also aimed to ensure that all details of the case, including the investigation and legal framework, were adequately prepared for the next phase of the trial.

Longwe Twala’s defence team will now present their arguments, while the prosecution looks to solidify their case based on the evidence provided by Chicco and the police investigation. The court is expected to hear from key witnesses, including those who can corroborate the events surrounding the alleged theft.

Chicco’s Stance on His Sons’ Actions

Throughout this ordeal, Chicco Twala has remained firm in his stance, choosing to take the matter to court despite the involvement of his own sons. In a statement to the media, he made it clear that he would rather see justice served than allow his sons to continue down a destructive path. His transparency on the matter has raised eyebrows, particularly given Longwe’s history of legal troubles.

Chicco expressed his disappointment but stood by his decision to involve the authorities. “I’d rather see him in jail than continuing on the streets,” he stated, highlighting his long-standing concerns about Longwe’s behaviour. Chicco’s willingness to see his son face justice has been praised by some, while others have questioned whether the public nature of the case will further strain the family’s relationship.
