Eskom has confirmed that loadshedding will remain suspended indefinitely. This pause in the power utility’s load management strategy comes on the back of a promising period of two uninterrupted weeks, marked by a stable generation capacity and sufficient emergency reserves.
The current cessation of loadshedding reflects positively on Eskom’s operational improvements and efforts to stabilise the national power grid. “This decision comes after two consecutive weeks without load shedding, as a result of sustained available generation capacity and adequate emergency reserves,” Eskom elaborated in a statement.
Further bolstering the nation’s electricity supply, Eskom shared optimistic plans for the immediate future: “Furthermore, Eskom plans to return 1,800MW of generation capacity back into service on Friday.” This significant boost in generation capacity is expected to further alleviate the strain on the national grid and reduce the likelihood of future power cuts.
In its commitment to keeping the public informed, Eskom assured that a comprehensive system update would be provided on Sunday afternoon. The utility also pledged prompt communication in the event of any significant changes impacting the power system’s stability.
As the country braces for the evening peak demand, anticipated to reach 26,816MW, the current status of unplanned outages stands at 13,807MW, with planned maintenance accounting for another 4,700MW. These figures underline the challenges still faced by Eskom in maintaining a balance between electricity supply and demand.
