Senwabarwana, Limpopo – A 43-year-old female police sergeant stationed at the Senwabarwana Police Station in Limpopo was arrested on Thursday, 9 October 2024, for allegedly orchestrating a series of murders aimed at benefiting from insurance claims. The sergeant is accused of killing six individuals to collect over R10 million in insurance payouts.
The Shocking Arrest
The officer’s arrest came after an intensive investigation by the South African Police Service (SAPS), which uncovered a chilling plot involving insurance policies. It is alleged that the sergeant took out multiple life and funeral policies on her victims, some of whom were disabled or mentally challenged. These victims, believed to have been vulnerable and known to her personally, trusted the sergeant, who exploited their relationship to secure financial gains.
According to police spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe, the suspect strategically targeted individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds, setting herself up as the sole beneficiary on their insurance policies. Limpopo Provincial Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, condemned the actions, describing them as a gross betrayal of public trust. National Police Commissioner General Fannie Masemola echoed these sentiments, labeling the officer’s actions as disgraceful .
The murders reportedly began in 2019, with the sergeant allegedly orchestrating the deaths to profit from a range of insurance products across different financial institutions. Captain Keshi Mabunda, who led the investigation, uncovered that the sergeant meticulously arranged insurance covers that included life, funeral, and accidental death benefits for her victims. This case has drawn comparisons to the infamous Rosemary Ndlovu, another former police officer convicted in 2021 for similar insurance-related murders .
Legal Proceedings and Potential Charges
Pattern of Insurance-Related Murders
The sergeant will appear in the Polokwane Magistrate’s Court, facing multiple charges, including six counts of murder and 17 counts of fraud. The case has garnered widespread attention, highlighting issues of accountability within the police force. As the investigation continues, there are calls for tighter controls on how insurance policies can be exploited, especially by those in positions of authority .
