Limpopo Police Launch Manhunt

Limpopo police have initiated an intensive search for 24-year-old Thembinkosi Gift Mabunda, who escaped from custody on Friday in Malamulele. Mabunda, facing charges including hijacking, fled while being escorted back to a police vehicle following a court appearance.

According to police spokesperson Stephen Thakeng, Mabunda was among five prisoners awaiting trial and was about to board the prisoner’s truck when he made his escape. The exact circumstances of his flight are under internal investigation. Authorities have added charges of escaping from lawful custody and aiding a prisoner to escape. The public is cautioned against attempting to apprehend Mabunda, as he is considered dangerous.

This incident is the latest in a series of prisoner escapes in Limpopo, raising concerns about security protocols within the South African Police Service (SAPS). In November 2023, three inmates—Ronald Chauke (33), Jimmy Matirele (32), and Shadrack Chauke (32)—escaped from the Saselamani police station near Malamulele by cutting through the roof of their holding cell. Police discovered the escape during a routine patrol and have since re-arrested one of the escapees, while two remain at large.

Similarly, in May 2023, three suspects escaped from the Hlogotlou police station in Limpopo by cutting through mesh wire. One was re-arrested on the premises, but two others—facing charges ranging from robbery to attempted murder—are still on the run.

These repeated incidents have prompted calls for a review of security measures at police holding facilities across the province. Provincial police commissioner Lieutenant-General Thembi Hadebe has urged community members to provide any information that could assist in recapturing the escapees. She emphasized the importance of public cooperation in ensuring the safety and security of the community.

The SAPS has faced criticism over the frequency of such escapes, with concerns about infrastructure vulnerabilities and potential lapses in protocol. In response, authorities have pledged to conduct thorough investigations into each incident and implement necessary improvements to prevent future occurrences.

Community members are advised to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to the police. Anyone with information regarding Mabunda’s whereabouts is urged to contact the investigating officer, Detective Captain Nkhangweleni Tshilande, at 072 728 1504 or Crime Stop at 08600 10111. Anonymous tips can also be submitted via the My SAPS App.
