Hawks

Groblersdal – The Limpopo Hawks have uncovered a clandestine drug laboratory worth an estimated R2 billion in Groblersdal, resulting in the arrest of four suspects, including the farm owner and two Mexican nationals. This operation is part of the ongoing war against drugs led by the Hawks, with the arrests being welcomed by Minister of Police, Senzo Mchunu.
Operation Details
Kamogelo Mokgotsi, the Ministry of Police Spokesperson, and Colonel Katlego Mogale, the Hawks National Spokesperson, confirmed that the arrests were made on 19 July 2024. The operation was carried out by the Limpopo Serious Organised Crime Investigation (SOCI) team, assisted by the Limpopo Tactical Response Team.
“It is reported that the Hawks in Limpopo received information about suspicious activities taking place at the farm, which was then operationalised and the multi-disciplinary team pounced. Four structures on the property were searched, and large quantities of chemicals used in the manufacturing of illicit drugs, including acetone and crystal meth, were recovered,” said Mokgotsi and Mogale.
Significant Seizure
The discovery of the drug lab is a major breakthrough in the fight against illicit drug manufacturing in South Africa. The seized chemicals and crystal meth have an estimated street value of R2 billion, highlighting the scale and sophistication of the operation.
Ongoing Investigation
The Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation has been actively targeting drug manufacturing operations this year, uncovering ten clandestine drug laboratories and making 34 arrests so far. The investigation into the Groblersdal drug lab is ongoing, with authorities not ruling out the possibility of further arrests.
“Whilst the investigation continues, the arrested suspects will make their first appearance in the Groblersdal Magistrate’s court on the 22 July 2024 on charges of manufacturing, dealing, and possession of illicit drugs. The Hawks are not ruling out the possibility of more suspects being arrested,” added Mokgotsi and Mogale.
Minister’s Statement
Minister of Police, Senzo Mchunu, praised the coordinated efforts of the Limpopo Hawks and SAPS. He emphasised the importance of such operations in dismantling organised crime syndicates and reducing the supply of illegal drugs in the country.
“The outstanding arrests and the discovery of this massive drug lab underscore our commitment to tackling the drug problem head-on. The Hawks and SAPS have demonstrated exemplary teamwork and dedication,” said Mchunu.
