Limpopo ANCYL PEC Member Shot and Killed While Traveling to NGC Preparatory Meeting in Kimberley

Limpopo ANCYL PEC Member Shot and Killed While Traveling to NGC Preparatory Meeting in Kimberley. The member of the African National Congress Youth League’s provincial executive committee in Limpopo was fatally shot on Tuesday morning while en route to the Northern Cape for a key gathering ahead of the league’s National General Council, raising fresh concerns about safety and political violence in South Africa.

Details of the Tragic Incident

The shocking attack took place on Tuesday, 9 September 2025, as the deceased was traveling from Limpopo to Kimberley in the Northern Cape. According to a fellow Youth League PEC member who was in the same car, the incident unfolded on the Klerksdorp Road in the North West province. This stretch of road, part of the N12 highway that connects various provinces, is a common route for travelers heading south from Limpopo towards the Northern Cape.

Eyewitness accounts from the survivor describe a sudden and violent ambush, though specific details about the assailants or the exact circumstances remain limited at this early stage. The victim, whose identity has not yet been publicly released pending family notification and ongoing investigations, succumbed to gunshot wounds at the scene. Emergency services were called, but the individual was pronounced dead on arrival. The surviving PEC member escaped unharmed but was left traumatised by the event, highlighting the personal toll such attacks take on those involved.

Police in the North West have launched a full investigation into the matter, treating it as a case of murder. Initial reports suggest it could be linked to broader issues of road hijackings or targeted violence, though no motive has been confirmed. Authorities are appealing to the public for any information, including dashcam footage from vehicles in the area around the time of the incident. Klerksdorp Road has seen its share of criminal activity in recent years, with reports of hijackings and robberies along highways in the region, often targeting motorists during early morning hours when traffic is lighter.

This tragedy comes amid growing worries about safety for political figures and activists in South Africa, where incidents of violence against public representatives have been on the rise. In Limpopo alone, the province has grappled with internal party tensions and community unrest, sometimes spilling over into violent confrontations.

Background on the Victim and the ANCYL in Limpopo

The deceased was a dedicated member of the African National Congress Youth League (ANCYL) Provincial Executive Committee (PEC) in Limpopo, a body responsible for guiding the league’s activities at the provincial level. The ANCYL, formed as the youth wing of the ANC, plays a vital role in mobilising young people, advocating for economic transformation, and addressing issues like unemployment, education and land reform. In Limpopo, the PEC has been active in recent months, leading delegations and issuing statements on key matters.

Just days before the incident, on 4 September 2025, the ANCYL Limpopo PEC was involved in community engagements, with member Cde Siya Mkansi leading a delegation to discuss local development. The province’s youth league has also been vocal about internal ANC challenges, including criticisms of provincial chairperson Stanley ‘Chupu’ Mathabatha for what they called “cowardly” behaviour in stepping aside from leadership amid party disputes. These tensions stem from the May 2025 elective conference in Peter Mokaba, which was marred by chaos, including fights over delegate credentials and allegations of vote-rigging.

Limpopo, known for its rural landscapes, mining sectors and agricultural heartlands, faces high youth unemployment rates, often exceeding the national average of over 40% for those under 35. The ANCYL PEC works to channel these frustrations into constructive activism, making the loss of one of its members a significant blow to ongoing efforts.

The Preparatory Meeting and the Upcoming NGC

The victim was heading to a crucial preparatory meeting in Kimberley organised by the ANCYL ahead of its second National General Council (NGC). This gathering was meant to finalise strategies, discuss policy positions and rally support for the main event. The NGC itself is set to kick off on Wednesday, 10 September 2025, and conclude on Friday, 12 September 2025, at a venue in Kimberley, Northern Cape.

Themed “Economic Freedom and Radical Socio-Economic Transformation in Our Lifetime,” the second ANCYL NGC marks a historic moment for the league, building on its first such council. It aims to bring together youth leaders from across South Africa to assess progress on resolutions from previous conferences, debate economic policies and push for youth empowerment in the face of challenges like joblessness and inequality. Countdown posts on social media from the ANCYL national structures have built anticipation, with messages emphasising unity and radical change.

Kimberley, the host city, is symbolic for its rich history in South Africa’s struggle for freedom and its diamond mining heritage. The choice of venue underscores the league’s focus on economic issues, given the Northern Cape’s role in mining and renewable energy sectors. Delegates from all provinces, including Limpopo, were expected to contribute to discussions on fostering a non-racial, non-sexist and prosperous society.

The incident has cast a shadow over these preparations, potentially affecting attendance and morale. While no official statements from the ANCYL national leadership have been issued yet, sources within the organisation express deep sorrow and a commitment to honour the fallen comrade by pressing forward with the NGC’s agenda.
