Limpho Hani and SACP Demand Inquest
By Thabo Mosia
The widow of the late anti-apartheid activist Chris Hani, Limpho Hani, alongside the South African Communist Party (SACP), is calling for a comprehensive inquest into Hani’s 1993 assassination. This renewed demand coincides with the recent deportation of his convicted killer, Janusz Waluś, to Poland.
Deportation of Janusz Waluś
On Friday, Janusz Waluś, who assassinated SACP General Secretary Chris Hani in 1993, was deported to Poland after completing his parole period in South Africa. Waluś, a Polish immigrant, had spent over 28 years in prison before being granted parole in December 2022—a decision that faced significant opposition from both the South African government and various societal sectors.
Calls for an Inquest
Limpho Hani and the SACP have consistently expressed dissatisfaction with Waluś’s parole, arguing that many questions surrounding Hani’s assassination remain unanswered. They assert that Waluś has not provided a full disclosure of the circumstances and motivations behind the murder, leaving gaps in the historical record. In April 2023, marking the 30th anniversary of Hani’s death, the SACP launched an online petition advocating for an inquest to uncover the full truth.
Government’s Response
The South African government has acknowledged the concerns raised by Limpho Hani and the SACP. Newly appointed Justice Minister Mamoloko Kubayi stated that the government would consider the plea for an inquest, emphasizing the need to examine the legal framework and any potential new evidence that could lead to a different conclusion. Minister in the Presidency Khumbudzo Ntshavheni reiterated the government’s longstanding opposition to Waluś’s release, noting that since 2011, ministers of justice and correctional services have opposed his parole.
Political Reactions
The African National Congress (ANC) has also expressed disappointment over Waluś’s deportation. ANC Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula conveyed deep empathy for Limpho Hani and her family, stating, “We can all only imagine how Aus Limpho Hani and the family must feel after learning of the release of Janusz Waluś.” He emphasized the ANC’s opposition to Waluś’s release and called for a full confession to bring closure to the Hani family and the nation.
Historical Context
Chris Hani, a prominent anti-apartheid leader and General Secretary of the SACP, was assassinated on 10 April 1993, a period marked by intense negotiations to end apartheid in South Africa. His murder threatened to derail the country’s transition to democracy, nearly plunging the nation into civil unrest. Waluś, along with co-conspirator Clive Derby-Lewis, was convicted of the assassination. Both were initially sentenced to death, but their sentences were later commuted to life imprisonment following the abolition of the death penalty in South Africa.
Ongoing Pursuit of Justice
The deportation of Waluś has reignited discussions about unresolved aspects of Hani’s assassination. The SACP and Hani’s family maintain that a thorough inquest is essential to uncover the full truth and to hold all responsible parties accountable. They argue that without complete disclosure, justice remains incomplete, and the wounds inflicted by Hani’s assassination cannot fully heal.
