The Gauteng Provincial Legislature recently held a special sitting to honour two of South Africa’s most prominent political figures, Dr Naledi Pandor and Dr Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma, for their enduring contributions to the nation’s liberation and development. Both women, having served in various ministerial positions over the years, were recognised for their commitment to public service, their involvement in the struggle against apartheid, and their efforts to shape South Africa’s post-apartheid future.

The tribute, led by Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi, marked an important moment of reflection on the roles of Pandor and Dlamini Zuma, who have both recently retired from active government service.

Celebrating Dr Naledi Pandor’s Decades of Service

Dr Naledi Pandor retired from government after an illustrious career spanning nearly three decades. She held several key roles, including Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, Minister of Higher Education and Training, Minister of Science and Technology (twice), Minister of Home Affairs, and Minister of Education. Throughout her career, Pandor was a driving force in advancing South Africa’s education system, fostering international relations, and promoting scientific innovation.

Pandor’s dedication to improving the lives of South Africans, especially in the field of education, has been lauded by many. She played a pivotal role in improving access to higher education, driving efforts to reform the country’s curriculum, and supporting technological advancements. Her leadership was instrumental in positioning South Africa as a hub for research and development on the African continent.

In his address, Premier Lesufi acknowledged Pandor’s legacy, stating, “Dr Pandor has not only contributed to our country’s international standing but also made significant strides in shaping our education system. Her work reflects the kind of dedication that has empowered millions of South Africans and will continue to shape future generations.”

Honouring Dr Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma’s Legacy

Dr Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma, another key figure in South Africa’s government, was also honoured for her numerous contributions. Dlamini Zuma has served in multiple capacities, including Minister of Women, Youth and Persons with Disabilities, Minister in the Presidency for Planning, Monitoring and Evaluation, Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Minister of Home Affairs, and Minister of Health. Most notably, she was the Minister of Foreign Affairs from 1999 to 2009, a period in which she played a key role in cementing South Africa’s position on the global stage.

Her work in health, particularly her tenure as Minister of Health from 1994 to 1999, left a lasting impact on South Africa’s healthcare system. She championed health reforms during a challenging period in the country’s history, where the healthcare sector was transforming to serve all South Africans equitably after apartheid. Dlamini Zuma’s leadership also extended to the African Union (AU), where she became the first woman to chair the organisation from 2012 to 2017.

“Dr Dlamini Zuma’s efforts extend far beyond our national borders,” Lesufi said. “Her leadership at the African Union and in various government positions has positioned her as a true ambassador for South Africa’s values of equality, justice, and empowerment.”

The Struggle Against Apartheid

Both Pandor and Dlamini Zuma played crucial roles in the fight against apartheid. Their efforts during this period laid the foundation for the democracy South Africans enjoy today. Their dedication to the struggle, combined with their commitment to public service in post-apartheid South Africa, has earned them a revered place in the country’s history.

Premier Lesufi highlighted their significance in shaping modern South Africa, stating, “These two women represent the epitome of what it means to be a South African patriot. They didn’t only love our country; they loved our people. They sacrificed for our freedom, and their legacy is a constant reminder that our freedom was hard-fought and won.”

Words of Wisdom from the Honourees

In response to the tribute, Dr Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma encouraged South Africans to continue defending the gains made during the country’s revolution. “Defend the gains of the revolution and push the frontiers,” she said. “You must bequeath to the next generation a better Gauteng and a better South Africa than the one you have.” Her message served as a call to action for both current and future leaders, urging them to maintain the momentum in building a prosperous and equitable society.

Dr Naledi Pandor, in her response, echoed similar sentiments, stressing the importance of empowering the next generation. “There’s a lot of young people who have time to do a great deal of things, and if you can change our nation’s thinking of itself… all you need is the will to make the difference,” she said. Pandor’s message reflected her lifelong commitment to education and youth empowerment, encouraging young people to seize opportunities and contribute to the country’s development.

Gauteng Premier’s Tribute to Leadership and Patriotism

Lesufi’s tribute to Pandor and Dlamini Zuma was filled with praise for their tireless work in government and their roles in the broader liberation movement. “They represent every epoch of our freedom and every epoch of our revolution. We don’t have silver; we don’t have gold, but we do have these words: Thank you. We are indeed indebted to these two powerful women,” he concluded.

The special sitting was attended by key figures in government, civil society, and various stakeholders who have worked alongside Pandor and Dlamini Zuma throughout their careers. The event served not only as a moment of reflection but also as a reminder of the ongoing work that lies ahead in ensuring that the gains of South Africa’s liberation are not lost
