With the lives of at least 76 people lost and numerous others injured and displaced, Premier Lesufi has appointed a commission of inquiry to investigate the incident.

Led by Justice Sisi Khampepe, the commission aims to uncover the causes of the deadly blaze and hold those responsible accountable.

Joining Justice Khampepe on the commission are Advocate Thulani Makhubela and Vuyelwa Mathilda Mabena, both renowned for their legal expertise.

Together, these experienced individuals will delve into the broader issue of hijacked buildings in Johannesburg, shining a light on the circumstances that allowed this tragedy to occur.

Premier Lesufi expressed his concern regarding the prevalence of stolen buildings in Johannesburg, emphasizing the urgent need for a thorough intervention.

The Marshalltown fire stands as one of the deadliest incidents in recent memory, and Premier Lesufi intends to ensure that such disasters never happen again.

To accomplish this ambitious goal, the commission will closely examine the underlying issues behind hijacked buildings.

Its terms of reference will soon be made public through the Gazette, and a comprehensive report will be submitted to Premier Lesufi upon completion.

Premier Lesufi called on all affected residents to step forward and collaborate with the commission.

The Gauteng government seeks a complete overhaul of the situation, with the commission serving as the initial step towards achieving this objective.

By making submissions and working together, affected communities and organizations can assist the commission in thoroughly investigating this intractable problem.
