Learners Facing Matric Failure at Risk of Suicide, Warns SADAG

South African Depression and Anxiety Group (SADAG)

The South African Depression and Anxiety Group (SADAG) has raised serious concerns about the mental health challenges faced by learners who do not pass their matric exams. Following Basic Education Minister Siviwe Gwarube’s announcement of the 2024 matric results, which revealed an improved pass rate of 87.3%, SADAG emphasised the emotional turmoil experienced by the remaining percentage of learners who did not succeed.

The Psychological Impact of Matric Results

For many learners, matric results are a culmination of years of hard work and are seen as a gateway to future opportunities. Failing to meet expectations can lead to feelings of disappointment, hopelessness, and, in severe cases, suicidal thoughts. SADAG’s Operations Director, Cassey Chambers, highlighted the emotional rollercoaster that matriculants undergo during this period. She noted that some learners might feel they have no one to turn to, exacerbating their distress.

The Role of Support Systems

Chambers stressed the importance of robust support systems to help learners navigate setbacks and continue pursuing their goals. She pointed out that there are now more options available for matriculants than there were a decade or two ago, providing alternative pathways to success. SADAG offers free 24-hour counselling services to support learners during this challenging time, ensuring that help is always available.

Understanding the Statistics

While the national pass rate has increased from 82.9% in 2023 to 87.3% in 2024, it’s crucial to acknowledge the learners who did not pass. These individuals may experience heightened stress and anxiety, making mental health support services essential.

The Importance of Mental Health Awareness

SADAG’s warning serves as a reminder of the critical need for mental health awareness and support within the educational system. By recognising the emotional challenges faced by learners and providing accessible support, communities can help mitigate the risks associated with academic failure.
